Sweet love.

The love between these two was simply sweet. I must say, for a young man Billy knew what he wanted and would not back down. Paris was hesitant, and rightfully so given the time and place they lived in but Billy had no intentions of letting that fear override their feelings for each other. I loved that the story didn't harp on the rough times they faced during the 60's and 70's, it was mentioned but not the focus. The focus was all about the love of a younger Caucasian boy falling in love with a older African American girl in a time when that just wasn't tolerated. It moved a little fast at times but I absolutely enjoyed it. I loved them both, but Billy and his unyielding, unapologetic feelings for Paris stole my heart.

I love the actual idealism in this book

It's amusing how many people still view interracial relationships as a curiosity. Although many of us are mature, well informed and accepting it wasn't the same 30 or even 20 years ago and even sometimes today
.
This well written story deals with a realistic black woman whose grounded nature gets uprooted when am idealistic younger white man wants to court her. There is a cliche I've heard over the years, and it is usually made by the idealistic white member of the relationship, "I don't see color, I just see you." That is such a backward statement. Yes we all see color even when we love someone who is different. The problem is that the people who don't like the "mixing" only see in black and white.

Billy had that idealistic "I don't see color" mentality which is why, no matter how much he said it would be alright he would get incredibly angry when they were mistreated by intolerant white people. Where as Paris' father was prepared for trouble and took care of things when they were seen out in public together.

I appreciate Ms. Anderson's portrayal of the couple and the two things they shared, their love and sexual desire. It is not unrealistic to think that these two young people got horny and wanted more than just first, second and third bases. Anyone who has a problem with desire being a major part of the story is missing the point of him saving himself for her. It was a cherished gift he promised to give her on their wedding night. If they couldn't wait for their wedding night then the love and commitment would not have seemed as true. They could have given in at any time but that would have made them like everyone else who takes that aspect of marriage lightly.

I thought it was great that I was constantly waiting for the shoe to drop. But it might have been more realistic if something a little more serious happened as opposed to just being talked down or refused service.

My only twp criticisms would be that his dream of being a civil rights attorney somehow disappeared. I would have loved that to be part of his learning process and realization that just wanting to make things right doesn't guarantee that they will turn out that way. I would have liked them to interact with couples their age who were the same race or interracial. Friends they could socialize with so they wouldn't seem so solitary.

Otherwise it was a great read and I highly recommend it.

Set in Virginia of 1965. An interracial love affair begins.

The wrong place and the wrong time, just might be right. Forget about their families. The world's not to keen on the idea of them. Coming from two different world's, but raised without hate. Billy and Paris are two strangers that manage to form an undeniable connection on a deserted highway. That leads to falling in love.

Billy and Paris make a promises to their parents. Both in college and miles apart leads to restless night. Will they make it or will the outside tear them apart?

About the Author
Jaime Lerner is a renowned architect and planner who served three terms as mayor of Curitiba, Brazil and two terms as governor of the State of Paraná. He has won numerous international awards, including the United Nations Environmental Award in 1990, and was nominated as one of Time magazine’s 25 most influential thinkers in the world in 2010. Lerner is Founder of Jaime Lerner Associated Architects, served as President of the International Union of Architects from 2002-2005, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the World Resources Institute.

with a great political acumen

I was surprised to see this book published in English, as I have read it Portuguese not too long ago. Jaime Lerner was the mayor of my city and the governor of my home state, Paraná. His administrations, especially as a mayor of Curitiba, where he was able to implement many of his ideas and gained international renown almost immediately. His mayorship was, and is to this very day, recognised as one of the bests in Brazil's recent history. It gave Curitiba an outlook that distinguishes it from the typical scenario of major Brazilian cities: utter chaos, to put it bluntly. He was not only a very innovative, but rather perceptive and agile. He was able to implement his solutions, which were, at times, surprisingly simple and intuitive, with a great political acumen. In Brazil, if you only have good ideas, but no political acumen, hardly ever will you be able to put them into practice.

Lerner is today criticised, especially by the left-wing, on account of the way he did things in his administration, as well as because he may have not have given the proper attention to social aspect of the city. While this is truth in parts, it is easy to criticise him in hindsight. Today, one of the best known symbols of Curitiba, is a pedestrianised central street, which was done in a weekend, something rather hard to achieve in a democracy. I do not give much credit to most of these criticisms, because they miss the big picture of Brazilian politics. In some cases, Lerner was merely wise enough to pick the right people and put them in the right places, so there was a lot of cohesion in his administration, something which enabled him to implement his plans. However, it must be recognised that some of the things he was able to achieve then would be hard to do in today's Brazil, especially if you consider the most radical views of democracy.

As for the social aspect of the criticism, that is an eternal discussion in Brazil, a structural problem, but Curitiba has long been known for one of the most robust middle classes in the entire country, and that is quite an achievement, I'd say. Of course Lerner could not solve structural problems in his limited tenures, nor could he avoid the challenges the city would inevitably face in the future, so some of these criticisms are simply misplaced. The municipal administrations that followed have failed to live up to the challenges and pressures today's cities face, and so the quality of life in Curitiba has fallen sharply, even though the ''mark'' of Curitiba remains very much alive. Brazilians have not yet learned how to be democratic, and the discussions are very polarised on both sides - in the society and in the local administration. Recently, we can see some changes, timid, however.

But this book is not only about Curitiba. It has the trademark of Lerner's thoughts and solutions. He believes in the simplicity to solve some of today's cities problems, initiatives that generate a positive chain of actions that eventually transform a city - that is what urban acupuncture is about.Today, we see a lot of endless discussions about how to solve problems, challenges, and how some people put forward some pseudo-complex propositions, which all eventually come to naught or end up worsening the situation.

I think that Lerner's message is simple, because he likes simple solutions, which is not the same as a superficial. It's a light, easy to ready book, bringing several cases of urban acupuncture around the world. Sometimes, to start the recovery of a city, all you have to do is to start this chain of reactions with a good urban acupuncture. The recovery will come in time, if the city and the people react accordingly.

About the Author

Jim Stone is an Associate Professor of Photography at the University of New Mexico. His photographs have been collected by the Museum of Modern Art and The Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others. Books of his work include Stranger Than Fiction (Light Work, 1993),Historiostomy (Piltdown Press, 2001), and Why My Pictures are Good (Nazraeli Press, 2005).

He has also published six higher education titles that are widely used in university courses: A User¹s Guide to the View Camera, Darkroom Dynamics, Photography, Photography: The Essential Way, A Short Course in Photography, and A Short Course in Digital Photography.

 

Barbara London has authored and co-authored many photography books from their first editions to their current ones, including Photography, Photography: The Essential Way, A Short Course in Photography, A Short Course in Digital Photography, The Photograph Collector's Guide, and more.

John Upton, Professor Emeritus, was for many years Chair of Photography at Orange Coast College, one of the largest photography departments in the U.S. He has curated a number of exhibitions, including Color as Form: A History of Color Photography. His work is included in many private and public collections, including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

I have used this text for teaching silver based analog photography since the first edition. It's clear, well organized, and has great diagrams and practical tips. However, its price now is an absurdity, even immoral for a book that gets much of its material from 35 years ago. So, if you are learning analog photography, buy an old edition: one can be had for 5$ (yes, five!) dollars. Then buy a cheap book on digital if you need one. At some point, book buyers need to send a message.

BUYER BE INFORMED - AMAZON'S DESCRIPTION INCOMPLETE AS Of MARCH 2014

Some of the material in this new 11th Edition is only available through an eText - in other words, it is NOT in the printed book.

The publisher has EXCLUDED sections in this new print edition that were included in previous editions. Sections on Developing a Negative; Printing in a Darkroom; Color: Film and Darkroom; View Camera; and The Zone System are NOT in the printed book. A Troubleshooting section for film and darkroom problems is also NOT in the printed book.

According to the printed book's Preface, this information has been moved out of the printed edition and is in only available in the eText version of the book. The Preface also states "purchase of the paper book gives you full access to the eText" (that contains everything in the printed book plus those sections just described). THIS IS NOT THE CASE. AN ACCESS CODE IS REQUIRED.

Prior to the preface the publisher has included a page describing how to access the eText. Very simple description, very simple process, but once you actually go to their web site it NOT as described. Once arriving there, you learn an ACCESS CODE is required to view / use the eText. In addition, you learn a COURSE ID is also required.

After my contacting publisher via telephone, it is learned when they sell the printed book, they include the ACCESS CODE on a printed card that is set loosely inside the front or back cover and then the book is shrink-wrapped as a unit. They explain when the book goes out to third party sellers (AMAZON) they have no control over what happens to the card.

Apparently other reviewers have learned the ACCESS CODE is also unique to one person, i.e. t is not transferable to someone else should you decide to give / sell the book.

Also according to other reviews, the eText is NOT viewable on Apple products.

Lastly, some descriptions and emails from sellers indicate the book they sell is a "stand alone version". A more accurate description is does NOT include / EXCLUDES access to the eText.

The missing link?

I teach certification classes for those wishing to certify with the Professional Photographer's Certification Commission. I bought this addition and was surprised to find that they have removed several chapters from the book and put them on line. Apparently you are supposed to get a code with the book so you can go online to reference the chapters. I have yet to find the code anywhere in the book.

This book has personal stories and helpful advice from an HSP.

If you are a highly sensitive person (HSP) or want to better understand someone who is, then this is a helpful read. The author, Kelly O'Laughlin, explains what being an highly sensitive person means and gives examples of how this trait has impacted her life for both the good and the bad. You get a glimpse of what life is like in her shoes as an HSP because she gives specific examples from her own life experiences. From her own insights, she provides the reader with helpful advice and suggestions that highly sensitive people (and introverts too) can use to make their lives easier and more manageable.

A reminder to get out of our heads and into our hearts!

I loved this book, so much so, that I read it in one sitting. It is written in a warm and witty style. It made me laugh out loud several times because I SO identified with the contents! It is an important reminder of what it means to live in this world as an HSP. It's a good reminder of the simple but bountiful JOYS we can experience as highly sensitive souls because of the intensity of our emotions. I truly identified with the writer and her experiences and that is a precious thing for a human to have, when you've spent decades believing that you are defective!

The book contains helpful tips on how to try and gain the understanding of a partner who might be a non HSP.

It is a good reminder to get out of our heads and into our hearts, to make the most of the gifts, to revel in them, yes, the bliss of contemplating the simple beauty of a flower!

The book tenderly explores the deep bonds we share with our pets - I found this particularly moving because of the experiences that I have had. It touches on loss and how we as HSPs can get caught up in anticipating losses yet to be ours....as someone who recently has experienced a big loss, I can say that we are actually good at coping because we can immerse ourselves in the realness and surrealness of it and we appreciate every little moment because we CAN anticipate coming losses.

This book reminded me that in spite of all the difficulties and inevitable suffering that life brings to HSPs, I wouldn't change how I am for anything because the upside brings such riches and to me, that far outweighs the difficulties.

A positive highly sensitive point of view

This book gave me renewed strength to stay true to myself. I feel like it's very important for people who are not highly sensitive to be able to access a neutral point of view, hence aiding in an understanding between the HSP and their partner, friends and family. This book needs to reach as many people as possible, both highly sensitive, and not alike!!! Knowing I am not alone, and someone actually feels the entire world like I do brings a smile to my face and a sigh of relief. She brought years of questioning what was wrong to a grinding hault! Being highly sensitive may be a challenge, but it's a gift nonetheless. This book is a must read for family and loved ones of the highly sensitive, there is sure to be an a ha moment for them as well. Kelly's strength comes partly from her spouses acceptance and support. Awesome job representing the highly sensitive! Thank you ♡

As a longtime fan of this author I found that his techniques are as bright and useful today as they were some half decade ago. The Best of Charles Jayne is highly recommended to any astrologer who is seeking a deeper meaning to the procedure of chart analysis.
