PARTLY SIGNIFICANT, PARTLY WEAK

Written by an outstanding Noble Prize winning scientist this book deserves respect. The basic thesis that natural selection favored short time success and thus endangers the long-term future of humanity is well put in the metaphor of "original sin." Its scientific parts, providing a clear outline of evolution and selection and their biological bases, are recommended readings for all decision makers and serious citizen. But when moving outside the domains of bio-sciences, mapping dangers, and proposing "solutions" the book is less impressive.
Leaving aside problematic uses of the term "rational," doubtful understandings of the inner nature of "faiths," and some unwarranted as well as superfluous judgments on current affairs, the book suffers from two main weaknesses: Disregard of main dangers facing humanity; and lack of serious consideration of the agency needed for coping with them.
Green house effects, degradation of the ecology and resources scarcities, as mentioned in the book, are only some of the serious problems facing humanity. Not less portentous are problems posed by human enhancement, nano-technologies, intelligent robots, engineered viruses, possibly dangerous high energy experiments, and other knowledge and tools provided by science and technology which can, by design or inadvertently, cause serious damage to humanity and even bring about its termination. These dangers are recognized in an increasing body of literature - but ignored in this book.
To go one level deeper, the dangers stem from a growing hiatus between the rapidly increasing capabilities of humanity to impact on its futures supplied by science and technology on one hand, and the absence of proportional upgrading of human moral, cognitive, emotional and institutional capacities to assure use of the increasing future-shaping capabilities for the better on the other. Surely, this is not the fault of science and technology. Still, its role in enabling humanity to destroy itself, hand-in-hand with enabling unprecedented human thriving, must be frankly recognized. But this unintended consequence of science and technology with all that it implies is not mentioned in the book.
Coping with the opportunities and dangers posed to humanity by science and technology, as combined with constraining genetic endowments and cultural learning limitations, requires radical measures, including regulation of science and technology, limitations of national sovereignty and so on - leading to the critical question of agency.
The prescriptions suggested by the book are rather conventional and do not meet requirements. Concerning agency, the authors perceptively point out "if the world's leaders could become more actively involved in the fight for the survival of humanity....the dangers... can be deflected (p. 211). But how to bring about such involvement by world leaders -- is left open.
Thus, this book joins the vast literature pointing out dangers, exploring some of the required countermeasures while ignoring other urgently required ones, and leaving the critical issue of agency open or escaping into wishful thinking on the "wisdom of the multitudes," emerging global civic society and similar deus ex machina illusions.

Amazing, lightweight and explaining

I find it quite strange that this book got only 2 reviews so far. The author did the same fabulous job to explain genetics as David Attenborough to explain the world of plants and animals, or Brian Cox to explain physics.
I had little time and hundreds of of urgent issues, despite that I couldn't wait until I can continue to read this book.
With my very patchy knowledge of chemistry and biology I was able to devour the book without looking in a dictionary on encyclopaedia very often.

Packed with deep knowledge and insight, the author (a Nobel Laureate), presents in plain easy to understand language how the principles of natural selection responsible for ascend of humanity so far could very well lead to its demise. Natural selection is the original sin. Human's are blessed with a superior brain to comprehend the flaws of natural selection. And to survive we must act against natural selection.

Small and very readable. The Table of Content interestingly summarizes the main ideas in each chapter. Just reading the Table of Content reveals the basic thesis of the author.

An interesting book that connects the biology of living beings to the fate of humanity.

the final piano exercise books

So you've made it through all the Schmitt, Hanon, Hertz, Cortot, Czerny, etc. exercise books. You feel confident about your abilities to play any 5-note phrase in any order and any key. Scales in 3rds, 6ths, and octaves? No problem. You doubt there are any piano exercises you COULDN'T do with aplomb and finesse.

My friend, it's time for these Liszt Technical Exercises to see what you're really made of.

These are not simple exercises. Oh sure, they start out simple, like they always do, but from there...let's just say you'd better have a pretty advanced technique to play these up to speed. As others have mentioned, dynamic markings make their presence felt, and you'd better know how to deal with them. But that's not really the crux of these exercises. They are made for advanced pianists with advanced technique, so unless you have it, I recommend going back to some easier exercise books (as mentioned above) and making sure you can play those at an advanced speed (108bpm tends to be the objective).

To sum up: this is the final book of piano exercises you'll ever need. Start with Schmitt and end here. In the meantime you'll have enough technique to tackle ANY existing piano piece. And when you finish, know that the only thing standing between you and concert piano stardom is YOU, because certainly you have the raw ability to play any piece you want.

Thank you Robert Goldsand, My Great Master Teacher

I heartily recommend this volume of really good tecnic building exercises for the serious concert pianist The fingerings of octaves,Double sixthe AND the Double Thirds are for the most part spot on. I commend Amazon for carrying such reallt good informational volumes for the aspiring Artist.
I studied many years with Robert Goldsand, who studied with Moritz Rosenthal, who studied with FRANZ LISZT!!! One of the staples of the tecnical repertoire[under Goldsand] were the scales in Double Thirds and Double Sixths.Alas after carefully scrutinizing the fingerings of the Double Thirds and Double Sixths, I found a few differences of opinion with Herr Goldsand.... but there is enough information there that you will still get usable information for developing your tecnic!!! Enjoy, and "Courage" as Goldsand's advice used to be!

A Challenge but......

in my opinion it helps emensly!

some of the pieces i was working on caused pain in my hands and back. i talked with a friend and they said that i dont enough strength in my fingers to play my pieces well in tempo and correctly. they suggested holding down four notes and playing the remaining finger. when i got home that night i looked in my library passed Brhms and Crammer and Czerny and yes even Hanon and found Liszt! i looked at the first exersise and i played through it a few times (id changed the fingers being played but stayed in the same key). it took about an hour. one thing the first exercise told me was what fingers i needed to work on! i talked with my teacher and she told me i can go on and work from Liszt but: DO IT SLOWLY and CONSENTRATE on a VERY LOOSE WRIST and finger development.

the strong accents can be a little tricky but after youve done it for a week or so it can be quite fun! it helps with accenting beats other than beat one! after finger controll has been established then you can play the full range of dymanics. in the first few numbers, fingers four and five are going to be the biggest challenge but if done properly it will soon pay off! after playing just the first five numbers in the book, i felt light in the fingers and not tensed. and thats one thing we cant have when playing pieces!

i used to start my pracitce by doing scales and Hanon; well now i do Liszt (for finger independence and strength/loose wrist)[the slowest tempo in my warmup session], Hanon (finger speed and dexterity)[medium tempo in my warmup session], then scales (for greater speed and finger accents)[fstest tempo in my warmup session]. all this takes about 45 minutes to an hour and im set to work on what ever i need to for the next several hours!

if you want to be fluent in all kinds of area of pianism (especialy Liszt!), this book is for you BUT it can not be set on a booksehlf! if you dont have a piano do some of the exercises on a hard surfice! 400something pages is alot and some of it will seem impossable but technique will not come over night....just as the world was not created in a day!

Pre-Requiments for the user of the book would be:
1. Patiance with yourself! if something doesnt come out perfect the first time, come back to it later! you brain is working but sometimes we shove information into it instead of programming the information! our brains need time to internalize what new task we give it. the brain is far more supirrior than any computer we humans can make!
2. Time...plenty of it! it takes time to learn any new skill! pianists are by no means exemped from this law!
3. an open mind!...if your mind is not on what your doing, it is then pointless continuing the task! just stop right there! your mind needs to be working just as much (if not MORE) as your fingers are working.

A must read for every coach and researcher in the game

'Science and Soccer' provides a very good brief review of the many areas associated with football/soccer and includes a detailed list of primary sources for further investigation. As an introduction to the components of the game, this is an ideal place to start. Coaches and researchers alike will find this publication worthwhile. Every coach working with elite-level players must have a copy. Those familiar with Williams' work are never disappointed. It does not explain many things which it mentions. It repeats many times over how soccer is a demanding sport, very redundant. The book is filled with scientific fluff (cites studies) and then many times it goes on to conclude the field of discussion is not backed by science because of the varying or lack of scientific results. It deserves 2 stars because I only found bits of useful information. You might rate it as a 3 or 4 if you are completely new to the various parts that make up performance in soccer. Overall this book if very general.

Myers-Briggs for companies - surprisingly effective.

Criticisms that this book merely recycles standard Myers-Briggs ideas are misplaced. Most people familiar with ideas of psychological type might agree there was *some* case for an analogous approach to organisational character, perhaps at the level of the four categories of temperament. However, William Bridges succeeds in showing how applying the sixteen types of Myers-Briggs type theory can highlight essential and distinctive organisational characteristics. Most of his examples, although dated, seem compelling. There are a few issues: I suspect that most people would consider Hewlett-Packard to be SF, rather than ST, as Dr. Bridges has it (p. 25). And even for a book first published in 1990, the omission of Microsoft is a little surprising (INTJ?).
The other dimension of organisational analysis covered in this book is that of organisational development and lifecycle. Again, Dr. Bridges leverages type theory to develop some interesting ideas as to the different type-characteristics exhibited from organisation conception ("the Dream"), through maturity ("Becoming an Institution"), to organisational death. Given the extent of merger and acquisition activity in recent years, I was surprised to see how little attention Dr. Bridges gave to managing the cultural and developmental issues which surface when different company characteristics collide in M&A, (about half a page).
Finally, there is a deeper theoretical issue as to why Jungian/Myers-Briggs type theory - developed from Jung's theories of the human psyche, should be expected to apply to organisations at all. Do organisations assemble themselves around the type of their founders, does the type emerge as a side-effect of the types of employees who are best at tackling the company's problems, or is there a supra-human theory of "organisational psychology" trying to get out here? The book alludes to the existence of these kinds of problems, but does not really add much to our understanding.
All in all, this book will add value to anyone who already has a feel for the Myers-Briggs approach to personality types, and who is interested in effectively dealing with organisations.

A Genuine Classic

I am thrilled this book has been published again, with the new forward as well as new insights from Bridges, without a word from the original work being changed. It was a classic as soon as it first came out, and it remains one still.
Over the past several years, there has been an insurgence of writing on the topic of organizational character and/or culture. While some of them have had a few interesting things to say, none have even come close to the clarity, familiarity and usefulness of The Character of Organizations. When this book first came out in 1992, I, a long time Myers Briggs junkie, became a man possessed. I tried to understand all of my organizational clients using this methodology and found it exceptionally useful in helping me to change my approach in the various different systems I was working at the time.
During the past 8 years, I have come to understand this simple, familiar approach to be the most helpful methodology in making sense of the complexity of organizational systems. Whenever I introduce it with either managers/leaders, or consultants working with organizations, the reactions are always the same. The "no wonder...", "a-ha's", or "so that's why..." indicate a breakthrough to another level of insight and understanding.
If managers and leaders read this book and made use of these concepts, they would find their ability to work more effectively with their departments, divisions, teams etc. increase dramatically and their frustrations dramatically reduce. If consultants, either internal or external, read this book and used the concepts as they both planned and implemented their interventions, the success of their interventions would significantly increase. The specific chapter on Character and Organization Development should be 'must reading' for all consultants working with organizations today.

The Character of Organizations

If a deeper understanding of a company or organization is important to you, this book could help! Conceptual in nature, Bridges' book outlines a framework for understanding different types of organization personalities, or character. He provides a quick assessment instrument, succinct descriptions of the 16 types in his framework, and poignant organizational examples for each. He relates this framework to stages of organizational life cycle, the three phases of organizational transition (about which he has written prolifically), and individual type and leadership. This book does not provide "how to" or checklists for action, but it leads me to important questions and possible implications about: what character the organization is and why, the transition process required to help the organization develop different character, movement from one stage of the life cycle to another, the role of leadership in doing so, and how one's individual personality relates to the character of the organization. With each reading I uncover something more or different in this gem of a book. Although the framework and assessment instrument have not been subjected to statistical analysis, The Character of Organizations is an enormously thought provoking and helpful resource.
