Good Book.

I recieved this book from the modelers club I belong to and at first I just put it on the shelf with the other books I have but I took it down the other night and started looking through it and was impressed. It actually is very informative book. I was surprisd by the history time line on the ship itself. There are tons of pictures including a few colored one so you get a pretty good idea of what the ship was like and the colors they used. There were a few B/W pictures that were fuzzy but the author expained them to my satisfaction anyway. I didn't plan on getting into any Azis Power type ships but when I actually started reading this book I found myself wanting to build this ship so I bought the model and will try it out. If you are interested in the WWII German Naval History outside the usual ships; ie; Bismark. You will find this very interesting and informative.

British Soldiers View of Afghanistan

I would suggest this book for anyone who wants to better understand what it was like to be on the ground in Helmand Province in September 2006. At the time there was a small cadre of NATO troops working alongside the Afghan National Army (ANA) & Afghan National Police (ANP) in the region around the town of Garmsir. Events are described at the small unit level and during a 13 day period.
Notable items include:
#1 Taliban & Afghan Government fighting abilities
#2 Drug use and corruption in Afghanistan
#3 Use of British, Estonian and Danish troops
#4 Importance of air power (aircraft & helicopters)
#5 Maps provided for Afghanistan, Southern Provinces & Garmsir

The book gives an "honest" portrayal of the types of problems that must be overcome if Afghan and NATO troops are to meet thier mission(s) in the country. At this time US troops are operating in some of these same areas and are facing these same issues.

Rivetting first hand account

I grew up in the same area as Doug Beattie and appreciate his background, his Ulster roots and his 'other family' the Royal Irish Regiment.

Doug Beattie tells the story of his life and the events that took him to Afghanistan and the hellish time in Garmsir. The book makes it feel as if you are right there with him. It made me think "what would I do in the same situation?" or "how would I hold up?" It does not hold back in providing a vivid picture of the reality of war and the challenges of leadership under fire. The accounts are very graphic. Beattie lets you right into his mind with his innermost thoughts.

The book is very well written and keeps drawing the reader in. I thoroughly recommend it.

Being a vet of the Vietnam war I could appreciate, at times, what the author went through both emotionally and phyically. It was 'a could not put down book.'
