About the Author
Dwight H. Perkins is the H. H. Burbank Professor of Political Economy Emeritus at Harvard University and former director of the Harvard Institute for International Development. Professor Perkins is a leading scholar on the economies of East and Southeast Asia. Professor Perkins’s legacy is contained not only in the many chapters he has contributed to Economics of Development and in his many scholarly books and articles, but also in the thousands of students he has taught over his distinguished academic career (including all of his current coauthors!).

Steven Radelet joined Economics of Development for its fifth edition. At the time he was a fellow at Harvard’s Institute for International Development and taught in both Harvard’s economics department and the Kennedy School of Government. He subsequently was deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia; a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development; and Senior Advisor on Development for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is an expert on foreign aid, developing country debt and financial crises, and economic growth, and he has extensive experience in West Africa and Southeast Asia. He currently serves as Chief Economist for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

David L. Lindauer is the Stanford Calderwood Professor of Economics at Wellesley College, where he has taught since 1981. He has frequently served as a consultant to the World Bank and was a faculty associate of the Harvard Institute for International Development. Professor Lindauer’s area of expertise is in labor economics. His research and policy advising has included work on industrial relations, labor costs and export potential, minimum wages, poverty and unemployment, public sector pay and employment, and racial affirmative action. He has worked on labor market issues in East and Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and elsewhere. Professor Lindauer, an award-winning teacher of economics, brings his considerable experience teaching undergraduates to this edition.

Steven A. Block is Professor of International Economics and head of the International Development Program at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He joins Economics of Development beginning with the seventh edition and has been teaching development economics at the Fletcher School since 1995. Professor Block also holds a faculty appointment at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, and has been a visiting scholar at the Harvard University Center for International Development and at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. He has published numerous scholarly articles in the areas of agricultural development and political economy, and worked extensively on policy advisory teams across Sub-Saharan Africa and in Southeast Asia.

THE BEST BOOK IN DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS

I have recently had the pleasure to read this book. As a researcher and consultant, I have had the possibility of reading and studying in depth most of the books, papers, and so on, published on Development but I am sincere when I say to my colleagues that I have never read anything like this book, through which Professors Perkins, Radelet and Lindauer are able to explain for Undergraduate students (and anyone interested in this field) the basics (and not so basics) of Development and Economic Growth, forgetting about showing off and focusing just on transferring their knowledge to their students / readers. If I had to describe the book in one word, I would it is just "amazing" and, as it can be inferred from my words, I strongly recommend this book.

The book I've been looking for for a long time

This is a well-organized, straight-forward, and informative introduction to development economics. The book has obviously been edited and polished so as to deliver information to the student in the most efficient way possible. Also, this book is so interesting that it is a joy to read. I cannot say that about very many textbooks.

Crappy Swatches

I love the textbook that goes with this, but the swatches are of poor quality. My teacher had to constantly bring in better fabric samples for us to cut swatches of.

Good Condition with Damaged Swatch

The price for this book was good and it was still wrapped. However when I opened it and began putting it together, a couple of the swatches were damaged and unuseable (which I'm paying for with my grade in my textiles class). The seller was great and the book arrived very quickly, and while the seller accurately described the condition of the book as "NEW", it was the responsibility of the publisher to ensure the book and accompanying materials were produced properly.

An Access Code That Had Already Been Registered

I received this in a very timely manner in very good condition. All was great until I had realized that the access code had already been registered when this was supposed to be a "new" book. The access code for the online material has practice tests and additional information to assist students outside of the classroom, so it's kind of necessary. Just be weary of who you're purchasing from.

Sanjaya Maniktala is the author of Power over Ethernet Interoperability and several other books on power electronics. He has held lead engineering and managerial positions in India, Singapore, Germany, and the United States. Mr. Maniktala holds several patents in power conversion and Power over Ethernet, including the floating Buck regulator topology and Mode transitioning in a Buck-Boost converter using a constant duty cycle difference technique.

Great book on magnetics

This book spends almost 150 pages detailing each and every concept related to magnetic design for flyback, forward converter. Shows how to calculate inductors for DC-DC converters. The author shows step by step formula to calculate the precise core size, wire guage, air gap etc. He also compares his practically implemented formula with the industry formulae used to calculate precise core size, wire guages etc. I enjoyed reading it. By far the best book on magnetics which takes each and every issue into consideration ( proximity,skin effect, fringing effect etc). Showed a complete table of different magnetic core manufacturers, their dimensions, gap etc. He also showed how to reduce core losses by varying the parameters such as Volume of the core, area of the core. length of the core and their effect on core losses. The textbook also has a very decent section on selection of PFC holdup time capacitor value which is usually a very complex topic and plenty of formulae exist which result in different values. But, this author has given a table which can be used to select the capacitor value, RMS current value right from the table. This is very good. I would definitely recommended this textbook for all levels of expertise.

An awesome book well written and concise

I've read this book at least two times in its entirety and also read it several times for references in places I've marked out for my personal use. When troubleshooting my PC or anyone's PC I first check the power Supply to see if the current is flowing and to see if the fan is working, here is where this book comes in very handy for me. I referenced several info from the book and did my troubleshooting exactly as the author described and it has helped me to isolate certain resistors, capacitors etc which I thought was working good when in fact it was faulty.

In one of his NOTE he mentions this on "resistors"; NOTE: Can we always use two resistors per divider? A commercial AC-DC power supply systems designer may need to think twice before using any single resistor larger than about 0.5 MΩ. Some extremely quality-conscious power supply companies have internal rules prohibiting any value greater than 100 kΩ. Contamination on the PCB, or moisture and humidity, can cause a large change in the resistance. So they ask their engineers to put several 100-kΩ resistors in series rather than use a single resistor.

On another topic the author was relating to Capacitors and this is what it says; 1. In terms of ability to handle stresses, a 100-W power supply will require an output capacitor roughly twice the value, in terms of capacitance and size, of a 50-W power supply (for the same input and output voltages). Here we assume that if we are using only one output capacitor, its ripple (RMS) current rating is almost proportional to its capacitance. That is not strictly true, however. More correctly, we can say that if a 50-W power supply has a single output capacitor of value C with a certain ripple rating IRIPP, then a 100-W power supply will require two such identical capacitors—each of value C and ripple rating IRIPP—paralleled together.

Suffice it to say that I highly recommend this book to any new student, novices and electronic technicians even for electricians. I'm a woodworker by trade but I am also a bit tech savvy and find this book quite the authority on Power Supply and Design.

Chatty Style Sets Power Converter Beginner at Ease

This book covers engineering analysis and design methods for switching power supplies. It begins with a
smattering of basic concepts about power-converter circuits, then moves on to converter circuits and presents the basic engineering equations for the commonly-used configurations (buck, boost, and buck-boost) and their more common derivative topologies (forward, half-bridge, flyback, etc.) The author also includes many practical tips that are important for optimized design.

Maniktala has discovered the importance of the ripple factor in converter optimization. This is the ratio of the amplitude of the varying component to the average component of a waveform. Although he does not emphasize its importance in magnetic design, he carries over from one of his other books, Switching Power Supplies: A to Z, the role of ripple factor. This insight makes the book worth purchasing in itself.

The author attempts to be as explanatory as possible. Though it might annoy experienced readers, the chatty (and verbose) writing style can set the nervous newcomer to power circuits more at ease. He includes some necessary math but tends to emphasize development of an intuition for converter behavior and especially the use of practical heuristic design rules.

Aging gracefully with lots of life left - not for SW testing

This book represents a pivot point in Perry's prolific published works that date from 1981. What makes it pivotal is the fact that this book synthesizes his approach to IS quality assurance from a production support viewpoint and his future work which focuses on software testing.
Although over 11 years old the QA approach contained in this book is still valid. To get at the gems, though, you have to overlook a few things. For example, terminology common in the mainframe data center of past decades sounds quaint even to those of us who came from that environment. Also, the code examples used to illustrate quality problems are sure to confuse the younger generation of C++ and Java developers and test professionals who probably never heard of PL/I and only vaguely know about FORTRAN.
What I like about this book and the reason why I think it's still an important reference is the fact that application quality from an enterprise perspective is addressed. This goes beyond testing and release processes, as well as beyond project issues surrounding applications delivery and SQA. The focus is on production and maintenance, although testing, SQA and project metrics are addressed.
In addition to the focus, the book contains checklists, questionnaires and sample forms that can be updated to reflect modern computing environments - and you may be surprised to find that much of this 'ancient' material requires very little modification. Another aspect of this book that I like is the material on software maintenance, which seems to be a lost art, although it's as important now as it ever was.
Don't let the age of this book deter you if you're interested in quality assurance from a production support point of view. If you are seeking a book on software testing this will not be useful (I recommend Systematic Software Testing by Rick D. Craig and Stefan P. Jaskiel for that) or SQA metrics (any of Robert B. Grady's books are great starting places). The best recommendation I can give is that this book has served me well in over a decade of consulting, and it probably will for years to come. However, it shouldn't be your only reference either.

Good for starting a new quality assurance department

This book would be very useful for those implementing QA groups in their companies. The book displays a deep understanding of the issues involved in that. The sample QA plan, manual, and its forms and charts can be very useful. Unfortunately, some of the material, such as the checklists, is pretty dated. The book takes a fairly scientific approach to QA, and that may appeal to some, but not others. The book doesn't follow the IS0 9000-3 model, per se. Finally, the book assumes the reader works in an internal corporate IT department rather than one which serves outside clients. The book is still very useful, nonetheless.

About the Author

David Northrup is Professor Emeritus of History at Boston College. He is the co-author of The Diary of Antera Duke: An Eighteenth-Century African Slave Trader (OUP, 2010) and author of How English Became the Global Language (2013), The Atlantic Slave Trade, Third Edition (2011), and Crosscurrents in the Black Atlantic, 1770-1965 (2007). He is also a contributor to the Oxford Handbook on the Atlantic World, c. 1450-1820 (OUP, 2009), Oxford Bibliographies Online, the Oxford History of the British Empire (OUP, 1999), and its companion series, Black Experience and the Empire (OUP, 2004).

He presents to us a beautiful and diverse culture

The intent of this work by Northrup was not necessarily to add new knowledge to what we already knew about Africa, but to introduce entirely new ideas. Northrup's thesis is in essence to dispel the notion of African positivity in regards to European relations during the slave trade, and essentially taking ideas regarding the role of Africans in a new direction and telling a very vivid and personal counter narrative to Eurocentric history. In "Africa's discovery of Europe," Northrup provides not only a vivid counter narrative, but also a very effective and descriptive one. He presents to us a beautiful and diverse culture, as well as a side that was violent and unforgiving, as was the case in many places during these centuries. These perspectives leave a detailed impression on the reader. Undoubtedly, Northrup's book would cause any scholar to question their previous knowledge about Africa's existence and encounters with Europeans prior to the 19th century version of the slave trade. Given such an intense topic, he has an obligation to readers to produce more detailed knowledge about the encounters. The initial encounters Africans had with Europeans were exaggerated in description, these exaggerations were especially noticeable when Northrup describes African facial features. Northrup acknowledges that there were some downfalls related to the understanding of the sources. It is fair to make the assumption that an individual who didn't know much about Africa would be overwhelmed with the information in the text. Due to these slight issues, we give this book a 4 out of 5 review. - Jon, Amber, Renaldo, David

In "Africa's Discovery of Europe," David Northrup engages primary sources to refute the metanarrative that Africa was unequivocally dominated by the Europeans. Northrup contends that prior to the European influence Africa was economically interdependent with rich political traditions. Intended for an academic audience, "Africa's Discovery of Europe" incorporates primary source narratives, travel ledgers, letters, and other historical media. This text is organized into six chapters, which spotlight primary sources relevant to the chapter's theme called "Voices." Although Northrup provides ample sources, explanatory footnotes that offer background information not readily available or known would improve the reading experience. Northrup's text centers around the assumption that readers feel sympathetic towards Africans' relations with Europeans during this period of discovery. The book's brevity does not undercut its academic content. Northrup successfully builds a foundation of the interactions of Africans and Europeans from points of view that are rarely depicted. Despite the abbreviated length of this history text, Northrup's incorporation and analysis of primary sources enrich the understanding of Africa from 1450-1850.

Great volume on pre-colonial African-European relations

I was very pleased, but not surprised, to see the publication of Africa's Discovery of Europe's third edition. This is a text I have been working with for years, first as a graduate student and then as a college teacher, and which I still enjoy flipping through from time to time, whenever I need inspiration for a new research project. Its principal merit is that of bringing to the attention of non-specialists the complexity of Africa's relation to Europe, taking the reader beyond the familiar narratives of the slave trade and European conquest. Northrup's narrative is one where European oppression and supremacy coexist side by side with African agency and independence. The volume's anecdotes remind us that the color line was often blurred and simplistic understandings of race should give way to a more nuanced understanding of otherness.
This volume can easily be enjoyed by readers of all levels with an interest in the history of Africa, its Diaspora and its complex interaction with Europe. This is the first and to this day only volume that makes a comprehensive history of African-European relations available to the general public. While in recent decades scholars have been paying growing attention to the history of African-European relations beyond the slave trade, prior to this volume's publication such histories remained confined to the often obscure and little engaging academic prose. It goes to the credit of this author, a seasoned academic, to be able to speak to a non-academic public.
Nevertheless, I particularly recommend this volume for any graduate and undergraduate course focused on the history of Africa and its diaspora, as well as comparative courses dealing with the history of migration and cross-cultural encounters. The volume lends itself to both cover-to-cover and selective reading as it covers four centuries of encounters between Africans and Europeans through an extensive collection of personal stories and anecdotes. As it addresses such disparate topics as the slave trade, religious conversion, and diplomacy, it can easily draw the attention of students with different interests. Furthermore, as each section comes with a generous list of primary and secondary references, this volume is also an ideal launching pad for a term paper.
