It takes its place with two other texts, Extraordinary Leadership Thinking Systems, Making a Difference and now well known The Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory, to complete a trio of leadership texts, that were developed over the course of teaching and directlng Extraordinary Leadership Seminars. This seminar series began when Dr. Roberta Gilbert was asked by a major denomination to create a training opportunity that would enrich their clergy. Pastors and other leaders were running into problems that they were unprepared to handle; namely, the emotional side of organizations.
To fill this crucial gap in leadership training, Dr. Gilbert designed the Extraordinary Leadership Seminar. Increasingly, leaders in other fields are also finding their way to the Extraordinary Leadership Seminar that she designed, based on Bowen family system theory. Dr. Gilbert s own leadership qualities, honed by her training and experience with Dr. Murray Bowen, as well as her years of experience in practice and with participants in the seminar, come through in the pages of this book. About the Author
Roberta Gilbert, MD, is a practicing psychiatrist whose main interest is thinking systems in the family and in organizations. Dr. Gilbert maintains a practice in Falls Church, VA. She is the founding director of the Center for the Study for Human Systems, where she developed and now directs Extraordinary Leadership Seminars. In addition to The Eight Concepts of Bowen Theory, Extraordinary Leadership: Thinking Systems, Making a Difference, and The Cornerstone Concept: In Leadership, In Life, she is the author of Extraordinary Relationships: A New Way of Thinking About Human Interactions" and "Connecting with our Children: Guiding Principles for Parents in a Troubled World. She first studied the family at the Menninger Clinic. Subsequently, she moved to Washington DC to study with Dr. Bowen who had developed a new way of thinking about human interactions--Bowen family systems theory. She is a faculty member at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family. Dr. Gilbert is frequently called upon to speak at special events and conferences. Directing the Extraordinary Leadership seminar is her primary focus.

What concept for Family System Theory is foundational? Self-differentiation!

"Five Stars" don't come easy or simple. I give the Cornerstone Concept because it explains why our nation is hurting just now for judicial leadership, executive leadership and legislative leadership at the apex in our national political offices . . . and it the current candidates who are at the top of the polls. This country has been in regression for decades and it starts with a current political impasse. Our political poles confuse those whose noise sounds like they are speaking for the majority, when they tickle the ears of the ones who are in charge of our regression. We will not buy a turnaround.
Another value that explains the five stars for why I give "The Cornerstone Concept"is solid approval at the highest possible level is grounded in the solid research by Murray Bowen back as far in the decade toward the end of the '40's through the next decade -- the '50's -- during the last century when he was a recognized researcher in the field of family studies for the Menninger Clinic do we begin to learn inadequacy for the prevailing model of the "identified patient" for the schizophrenic patient whom Dr. Bowen elected to study at first. The prevailing opinion back then did not explain the issue by the realities within the family of origin (Mother, Father, and identified patient). Families studies needed to search elsewhere and beyond the boundaries of merely the patient. What Murray Bowen was able to accomplish was to enlarge the field of inquiry beyond the patient. His research showed that the ground for the patient's psychiatric pain was under the control of a core issue. I refer any who need to check Bowen's theory from the researcher himself to examine his "Magna Charta" -- "Family Therapy in Clinical Practice" published in 1978 by Jason Aronson in New York and/or London. The ISBN# is: 0-87668-334-0. A core causative issue according to this stellar research were the actual relationships with the family of origin. What the research clearly evidence that the "Whole was more than the sum of its parts" -- to phrase clearly and forcefully, yet simply. This is why the first unit in Bowen's Magna Charta is labeled "Schizophrenia and the Family."
Another basis for granting Dr. Gilberts book four stars is the broad acceptance today among marriage and family therapists for the paradigm shift this theory offers to ground a workable basis for therapy. May I give any skeptical reader of this review to verify the acceptance of Bowen's research by a significant number of practitioners today in the trenches of helping families who are hurting for a family members disabling behavior that causes him and his family so much pain. Simply insert the words, "family systems theory" in your search engine for Google and see what Google will give you in hardly half a second. Today, my computer found 23,200,000 results. This includes clear simple definitions as well as scholarly articles. Contacts with leading groups of research resources that train doctors, counselors, business leaders, and on and on. Many well known church groups have found a key to their own regression in local, regional, and national levels of functional. Outstanding texts are now used to educate the next generation of pulpits, campus ministers, and marriage and family therapists for members of well-known ministries in our nation.
Bowen's model is so broadly accepted in and out of religious contexts that Gilbert's book offers a Chapter grounded in solid academic research to verify the ministry of Jesus Christ to function at the highest possible level as a human for the Cornerstone Concept. Read chapter 15. (I give this book six starts for this one chapter if it were possible.

A great introduction...

Dr Gilbert has a remarkable gift of making Family Systems Theory accessible to non-specialists. The concept of self-differentiation is vital in understanding and applying Bowen Theory. I highly commend this book for introducing newcomers to Family Systems Theory.
