About the Author
Ronald B. Adler is professor emeritus at Santa Barbara City College. Throughout his career, he has specialized in the study of organizational and interpersonal communication. He is the author of Confidence in Communication: A Guide to Assertive and Social Skills and coauthor of Understanding Human Communication, Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication as well as the widely used text Looking Out/Looking In.  Professor Adler is a consultant for a number of corporate, professional, and government clients and leads workshops in such areas as conflict resolution, presentational speaking, team building, and interviewing.   
Jeanne Marquardt Elmhorst is an instructor in communication studies at Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her courses reflect the variety in the communication discipline: business and professional, public speaking, listening, intercultural, and interpersonal. Jeanne lived and taught in Asia for three years and continues to find opportunities to travel, study, and volunteer in other countries. She enjoys providing training for business and not-for-profit clients.             
Kristen Lucas is an assistant professor in the Department of Management at University of Louisville, where she directs the business communication program. She teaches courses, conducts research, and facilitates management training sessions on organizational communication, workplace dignity, and careers. Her research has appeared in Journal of Business Ethics, Management Communication Quarterly, and Journal of Applied Communication Research.

Everyone should read Communicating at Work: Strategies for Success in Business and the Proessions

I was amazed by the information in this book. This was required reading for San Antonio College Business Speech Class. We read through the book in 3 weeks. The information in this book is invaluable. I have learned so much about communication because of this book. The book is broken down into 12 chapters. The chapters are as follows:
1. Communicating at Work
2. Communication Culture, and Work
3. Listening
4. Verbal and Nonverbal Messages
5. Interpersonal Strategies and Skills
6. Principles of Interviewing
7. Leading and Working in Teams
8. Effective Meetings
9. Developing and Organizing the Presentation
10. Verbal and Visual Support in Presentation
11. Delivering the Presentation
12. Types of Business Presentations

All of the chapters are filled with great information; however the ones that stood out to me the most were chapters 1 - 5 especially with a focus on listening. In the past I have missed opportunities because I had not fully listened (understood what was said). I have also been able to identify shot comings of supervisor and managers that could really use this book as much as me.

I recommend this book for reading pleasure as well. I set my book down next to my 89 year old grandfather. He picked it up and read chapters 4 - 10. He loved what it had to say.

The SAC curriculum provides a reading guide that says it should be read from chapters 1-5, 9-12, and 6-8. I would have to agree with it.

Appropriate Behavior

I am not the sharpest leaf on the tree and had been out of college for more than ten years before picking up this book. The book is organized well and the information is easily understood. Each chapter begins with Learning Objectives, 3 Good reasons why you should care, and Making the case for organizational behavior that introduces the material in the chapter with describing a real organization. If you are serious about your education and want to learn something this book is designed exactly for that. The book has a free companion website for the student and an online instructor resource. You can't hold onto the joy of enlightenment

Joko Beck was a very truthful and very wise teacher. She told it as it is. Seeking enlightenment can be very hard and trying but one must be willing to accept all of life's sorrows. The joys won't last for too long. You can't hold onto the joy of enlightenment. She says it's not for us to own as our own. It must be shared. Her style is tough love but the truth is, like the title, nothing special.

CHARLOTTE JOKO BECK IS SOMETHING SPECIAL!

"Nothing Special" is paradoxically something very special. It is a simple and enjoyable read and yet gives much insight into the essence of Zen. I have read many Zen related books and this one stands out as one of the best. It would be valuable to those familiar with Zen and Buddhism, as a reminder that the very root of Zen is "nothing special" and is most often best kept uncomplicated. Even more, this is an excellent book for readers who are unfamiliar but curious about Zen practice and ideas, as the author has a gift for relating the concepts simply and without unnecessary dogma. The question and answer portion at the end of each chapter is also helpful, as her students ask many questions which the reader may have as well. Based upon my reading of her books, it is my opinion that Ms. Beck is one of the true Western Zen Masters. She is one of the few here in America who has managed to keep the Zen in Zen and still make it pallatable, practical, and practicable.
Parenthetically, her other books, "Everyday Zen", and "Now Zen" are equally worthwhile. "Now Zen" is a little compilation book and an absolute gem. It is the first book I would give to anyone who was interested in Zen or what is so special about Nothing.

Waterfowl Hunting Beyond the Sport

I started my duck hunting days at 14, hunting with a 16 pump in the midwest in the early 50's. I lived to hunt ducks. For me this book was an education on what the best of duck hunting times were like back in the "Old Days" and how people turned that into a way of life to earn a living. Had no idea the imact the autoloader shotgun had on the duck population until I read this story. I would have loved to have witnessed the days that the skies were black with Canvasbacks and Redheads along the eastern seaboard as they are depicted in this book. The evolution of the gimics and gadgets to take more waterfowl by both the market-hunter and poacher are well documented with the photos and description of the "How To" by the author. After reading this book and the stories about the outlaw hunters that risked their lives and almost lost, one has to wonder how many just disappeared in night waters and storms with their efforts to cheat. Excellent history lesson for anyone who hunted ducks in the past or present.

I originally got this book, because there is a section on Captain Zack Ward (I own a lot of his older decoys). This is a very interesting book, and a great piece of history exposed. Nice read.

About the Author
Ray Whitford is a chartered engineer and has been Senior Lecturer in Aerodynamics and Aircraft Design with Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom for twenty years. He won the Rolls-Royce Award for Best Propulsion Submission in the Royal Aeronautical Society's 1997 Aerospace Journalist of the Year Awards and a similar prize in 2005 for Best Technology Submission. He is the author of over sixty papers and articles on aircraft design.

Look at your wings, please.

This book is in many ways a companion volume to the same author's Fundamentals of Fighter Design. The development of airliners is covered topically rather than in a narrative form and includes subdivisions like Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Stability and Control, and Structures and Materials which are common to the sister volume in form though not entirely in content. In addition there are sections on Airline Growth and Economics, Flying Boats, Passanger Cabins, Supersonic Transports and Flying-wing Airliners that are unique to this book. The level of presentation is descriptive and technical with a liberal use of charts and graphs and a miniumum use of formulae. One small critisicm is the lack of reference to figures in the text although this usually can be figured out.

In any text of this sort there are matters of choice to be made and one choice the author made is to virtually ignore the role of avionics in airliner operation whereas in Fundamentals of Fighter Design there is an entire chapter devoted to it. On the other hand, there is a very complete and clearly heart felt discussion of fatigue design high lighting the safe life and fail safe concepts. After reading this section you may never want to fly in a vintage airplane without making sure your life insurance is paid up!

From the point of view of a technically aware layperson who might want to know more about why an airliner he or she flies in is the way it is, I would certainly recommend this as one of the best single books to be found. From the point of view of a practicing engineer in another discipline this is an interesting introduction to the application of a different one. From the point of view of a historian this is a good background to understand how everything functionally fits together in an airliner though the lack of bibliographical reference makes it of limited utility in pieceing together a historical, cause and effect based narrative.

In summary, though not for everyone, this would be a worthwhile addition to the library of any aviation interested person and I am certainly glad to own it.

Really understanding airliner design and evolution

A wonderful, friendly text on understanding airliner design through the years and how and why it evolved as it has. Explanantions and accompanying illustrations are excellent, if, on occasion, somewhat technical. Still worthwhile for the layperson. I know of no similar, up-to-date book like it for civil aircraft. A valuable edition to anyone's library, who is truly interested in the whys and hows of an airliner.

Georgette Heyer at her funniest (and 'funnest')

Sprig Muslin has now replaced The Grand Sophy as my favourite Heyer regency. Humour and wit throughout.

The characters are so well-drawn. An ensemble cast, if you will, rather than one prominent main character (like Sophy). We have Sir Gareth Ludlow, a gallant Corinthian, who decides it's his duty to marry. Although there are innumerable eligible females eyeing him, he offers for Lady Hester, a mild, sensible spinster. (Don't you love the descriptor "sensible" -- guaranteed to attract the likes of staid clergymen or widowers with children.) Throw in Amanda, a spirited runaway with a lively imagination, whom, to be honest, I was prepared not to like (I've read too many stories with precocious young ladies who are obnoxious rather than charming), but I found her delightful. Even the secondary characters are funny and have their moments.

A very well-paced, enjoyable, fun story that is more comedy than romance. The whole book had me laughing, and the ending, inexplicably, reminded me of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."

A fun afternoon read

Let me preface the review by saying I am a long-time fan of Georgette Heyer and regency romance. That being said I found this a really fun read. I liked practical and sensible Hester and the handsome dashing hero Gareth Ludlow who has decided to marry Hester in a marriage of convenience. Much to his surprise she turns him down but before he can work on changing her mind he needs to enlist her aid with a beautiful headstrong runaway -- Amanda. The comedy is provided by the escapades of this young lady as she carefully spins her lies and stories as she searches for her true love. As both Hester and Gareth get caught up in her schemes, they find that love can be found in the most surprising ways. If you like an Austen type read with brilliant conversation and happy endings, then you should enjoy this.

My first Georgette Heyer read

I've heard that Georgette Heyer is similar to Jane Austen, which is why I've since purchased several Heyer books when they were on sale. This is the first I have read/listened to. I loved it. It reminded me of Sense and Sensibility but was funnier and less tragic. If you like Jane Austen, I recommend Heyer. However, I have also read that Heyer books are very clean. This is true, but there's a lot of sexual innuendo in this particular book, with references to "natural" siblings, mistresses and petticoat lines.

The narrator was outstanding. I'm almost afraid to listen to a Heyer book that is NOT read by Sian Phillips. It was PERFECT. She reminds me of Juliet Stevenson. Highly recommended to traditional Regency fans and fans of Jane Austen.

If you're looking for something refreshing and insightful

If you've ever heard Dr. Bray speak live at a conference or on his Career Revolution podcast, then you'd want to definitely get this book!!!

For those not familiar with Dr. Bray's approach, you will find this book refreshing, insightful and challenging. And here's why:
- Refreshing - Dr. Bray offers personal stories (his and others'), anecdotes and true life experiences to drive home his points; all peppered with humor. He's no prescribing some magical formula that's bound to fail.
- Insightful - unlike many feel-good books based on fables and hypotheticals, this books brings balance and perspective with research data, and real-world evidence.
- Challenging - what's another book on career and success that neither challenges you to seriously evaluate your priorities, nor compel you to take action??? This books takes a departure from the plethora of literature that is only focused on skills, competencies etc...without driving the reader to do something different. We could all rehearse those 10 point career advice mantras. Instead, from the first personal introductory story (on the ephemeral pursuit of happiness linked to some lofty job or career dream), you will be challenged to ask yourself tough questions about your career priorities, values and ultimately what you want do with your life holistically.

My personal take is that a career that makes you self-centered and does not enrich lives and relationships by giving back somehow or improving the world around us (family, community etc) is not worth having.

A must read!

As a long time listener of Dr. Bray's podcast, I was very excited to read this book and I was not disappointed! The chapters are short and easy to read while being packed with incredible information. Although I read the book cover to cover, the structure of the book is such that you can skip around and read what applies to you in whatever order you choose. There is a great blend of action steps, stories, examples, and humor. This is definitely a book that should be a staple in everyone's library! I highly recommend it for everyone and would also encourage those who haven't tuned in before to check out Dr. Bray's podcast. You'll not only benefit from the information he shares, but you'll get a sense of his personality and hear directly from him many of the principles he covers in the book.

This is a great book for anyone who isn't feeling happy or fulfilled with their life or career! Dr. Bray offers a practical and doable approach to problem solve almost any career dilemma! It isn't your classic cheerleader kind of book with lots of "wahoo, you've got this!" It's more of a lets look at your life, and career and see what's working for you and what's not. With a, how can we can get you back on track doing something you can feel great about, emphases! I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this book to anyone.
