In this long-awaited volume, on which he worked for twenty years, Mr. Wolfson describes the body of doctrine known as the Kalam. Kalam, an Arabic term meaning "speech" and hence "discussion," was applied to early attempts in Islam to adduce philosophic proofs for religious beliefs. It later came to designate a system of religious philosophy which reached its highest point in the eleventh century; the masters of Kalam, known as Mutakallimun, were in many respects the Muslim equivalent of the Christian Church Fathers. Mr. Wolfson studies the Kalam systematically, unfolding its philosophic origins and implications and observing its repercussions in other religions. He scrutinizes the texts of Muslim writers for their treatment of such crucial problems as the attributes of God, the Creation, causality, predestination and free will. In the process he shows how the teachings of the Koran were constantly interwoven with ideas from Greek and Oriental philosophies, Judaism, and Christianity as Islamic thought developed.

As lucidly written and intellectually stimulating as all the author's earlier books, this volume is a fitting capstone to a notable career.

Harry Wolfson spent sixty-six years at Harvard University, as undergraduate, graduate student, teacher, and professor emeritus. From 1925 until his retirement in 1958 he was Nathan Littauer Professor of Hebrew Literature and Philosophy at Harvard. He died in September 1974 at the age of 86.

The Philosophy of the Kalam is the last major work of one of the great scholars of our age. Harry Wolfson was renowned throughout the world for the depth, scope, and wisdom of his monumental volumes on the structure and growth of philosophic systems from Plato to Spinoza. This volume is a massive (over 800 pages, including the index) study of selected teachings of early Muslim philosophers/theologians, known as the Mutakallimun, whose viewpoints are known collectively as "the Kalam." The basic material was originally intended as part of a more general study of medieval Islamic thought, to be based on the limited documentation available.

This turn in was to be part of a study of the relation between philosophy and scriptural religions from Plato through Spinoza (in the seventeenth century). Published portions of the project include the Hellenistic Judaism of Philo of Alexandria. Unfortunately, Harry Austryn Wolfson (1887-1974) was unable to complete this ambitious undertaking, on which he had started work in the 1920s. Indeed, the second volume of his work on the Church Fathers, originally accepted for publication, was subjected to a thorough revision, and, in the end, never published. However, as the author explains in his Preface, it had dawned on him that the methods he had used in his books on Philo and the Church Fathers could be applied to the Kalam literature already in print. He could "prepare a volume on the Kalam in which certain problems peculiar to the Kalam would be dealt with in their relation to similar problems dealt with by Philo and the Church Fathers in their common attempt to interpret Scripture in terms of philosophy and to revise philosophy in conformity with Scripture." (That is the second half of a sentence; Wolfson's style is elegant, but demands concentration from the reader.)

The problems which Wolfson chose to discuss are: (1) Attributes; (2) Koran; (3) Creation; (4) Atomism; (5) Causality; (6) Predestination and Free Will. (Those familiar with Wolfson's exposition of what Spinoza did with the ideas of earlier philosophers will recognize most of the topics.)

The book is in large part dedicated to digging out the conclusions and arguments of the Mutakallimun from the later, better-known, Arabic writings, Muslim and Jewish, in which they are embedded. This requires a consideration of how philosophical doctrines reached the early Muslim thinkers, and their early encounters with philosophical versions of Christian theology. Histories of philosophy tend to point to Greek sources; as Wolfson points out, much of the early transmission of ideas was probably through the medium of Syriac (Christian Aramaic), traceable in part in changing terminology in Arabic.

As an inevitable consequence of this "excavation" of ideas, Wolfson sometimes seem to present more argumentation than substance as he works backwards in time.

This sometimes has the advantage of revealing how much the Kalam influenced later thinkers, like Avicenna, Averroes, and Maimonides (whose own work was later taken up by the Scholastics of the Latin Church).

The Kalam represents an early stage of Muslim thought, but not its original form. For beginners in the study of Islam and its philosophical dimensions, I would suggest the comparatively brief 320 pages of A. J. Wensinck's "The Muslim Creed: Its Genesis and Historical Development" (1932), which was well-received in the Muslim world on its first publication. Unhappily, the only in-print edition of the book is very expensive; fortunately, it is available in pdf formats (one with searchable text) from archive.org (a site hosted by the Library of Congress, with which every student should be familiar), free for the trouble of downloading.

"The Philosophy of the Kalam" really should be in print, in a less-expensive paperback edition, but in fact the pricey hardcover edition is available through third-party sellers only. Fortunately, archive.org offers two PDF versions of this book, as well. One, the larger file, is a straight scan of the 770-some pages of text and bibliography (not the index), and is more readable. The other features a machine-readable text, ideal for searching; but the resolution seems fuzzy to me, and it may be a strain on your eyes. I suggest downloading both PDFS, if your hard drive has room for them.

About the Author

Gregory J. Privitera is an associate professor of psychology at St. Bonaventure University. Dr. Privitera received his PhD in behavioral neuroscience in the field of psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He went on to complete postdoctoral research at Arizona State University before beginning his tenure at St. Bonaventure University. He is an author of multiple books on statistics, research methods, and the psychology of eating, in addition to authoring over two-dozen peer-reviewed scientific articles aimed at advancing our understanding of health and promoting the intake of healthier diets for children and adults. He oversees a variety of undergraduate student research projects at St. Bonaventure University where over two-dozen students, many of whom are now earning graduate degrees at various institutions, have coauthored research in his laboratories. For his research work, Dr. Privitera was recognized by St. Bonaventure University as Advisor of the Year in 2013, and awarded an Early Career Psychologist award by the American Psychological Association in 2015. For his work with students and fruitful record of teaching, Dr. Privitera was recognized in 2014 with the Award for Professional Excellence in Teaching―the highest teaching award at St. Bonaventure University. The first edition of this text was a recipient of the “Most Promising New Textbook” National Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. In addition to his teaching, research, and advisement, Dr. Privitera is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and is married with two children: a daughter, Grace, and a son, Aiden. Dr. Privitera is also the author of Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, 2nd Edition.

I am using this book in support of a National Academy of Science "blue ribbon" committee to review and improve the scientific quality of research on commercial truck and bus driver fatigue. We are looking at issues like measured variables, construct validity, sampling, research design, and causal inference. I have found the book to be extremely helpful. It articulates the requirements for sound science in a way that applies to almost any type of behavioral (and other) research. The book is clear, concise, and rich in content. I purchased this book for my university Research Methods course. This book is not very big so it fits perfectly in my backpack. I bought a used hardcover edition and the cover is very smooth. When I first opened it, I loved the smell of the new pages in this book even though it was used. The book has colorful graphs and data boxes that catch the eye. It contains definitions in a nice, easy to read, color and font. The book is very organized and is easy to navigate through. Although the book is somewhat pricy ($60 for used, $120 for new) it was perfect for my course.

This is a really good textbook. I needed to purchase it for a class, so I would have bought it anyway, but it is easy to read, and full of great information. The price I bought it for was outstanding too. Other places were charging 5x this price! I like this textbook so much that I will be adding it to my personal library instead of selling it at the end of the semester.

Cultural pressures among peers too often discourage interest in the sciences, especially among girls. We wrote this book because we felt that the narrative hook of adventuring on the moon could generate more interest in the physical sciences and in space exploration. That and we think our readers will have one wild ride!

Intended Audience:
Andromeda's Moon is a "hard science fiction" novel intended for ages 9 and up. The book is a collaboration between a 12-year-old daughter and her 39-year-old father.

Scientific Accuracy:
Scientific and technical details were reviewed and amended by experts, most notably astrophysicist Dr. Michelle Thaller at NASA's Education division and Constance Adams, a Space Architect whose work has included designing the TransHab module for the International Space Station. Andromeda's Moon carefully integrates scientific detail into the storyline, paying particular attention to the unique physical characteristics of the moon and space travel.

Interesting Plot

I have a love/hate relationship with the mystery genre. I love watching the logic of who done it, and trying to stay one step ahead of the mystery solvers. However, I hate it when the mystery solvers are sticking their noses where they don't belong, especially if the mystery solvers are kids, and there is someone else supposed to be solving this mystery. If they make the person who is supposed to be solving the case look petty and incompetent, I like it even less.

This book fell firmly into that category. There were times when I put it down and I almost didn't return. The only thing that kept me coming back was a desire to know if my suspicion about who the villain was was correct. I had had the guy picked out for the villain the moment they introduced him. I was correct, by the way, but I won't tell you who it was. You can figure it out for yourself.

This book was advertised as being full of hilarious moments ... and I suppose it is ... if your idea of hilarious is getting laughs from someone else's pain. There were moments I did laugh, but most of the time I just cringed or rolled my eyes. Mom says I talked to this book a lot.

I had no love for the main character, Andromeda, and very little sympathy for her plight. The reason for her getting stuck on the space ship was her own fault. She was being disrespectful of authority, especially of her father. She probably could have avoided getting trapped on that space ship by simply not taking her cat with her. That cat did NOTHING for the story, other than getting her trapped on the space ship, and I would frankly like to know how she zip-corded while carrying a cat cage. My mental image just falls short. I did finally figure out why the cat came though. You see, this was a co-write and one of the authors was a twelve year-old girl. Every twelve-year-old girl has her favorite animal, Annie's just happens to be a cat, and obviously the cat just had to come along as a result.

Andromeda, or Andrie as she was often called, reminded me of a spoiled brat. She was manipulative, conniving, disrespectful and all around left me with an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach. The only thing that ever induced me to feel sorry for her was when it was revealed that her mother got lost on the far side of the moon. There was only one thing that she did that I at all applauded was when she stood up for a girl who was being teased.

This book is also advertised as being scientifically accurate, as it was reviewed by someone from NASA. I'm sure that, on all of those points it probably was. However, something I always wondered was why technology is so much more advanced on the moon than it is on earth. I can understand why the stuff that involves people not weighing as much would not be on earth, but I would have thought that the classrooms on earth would have much of the same technology as does the ones on earth, especially Andrie's school, as she just struck me as someone who runs in high technology circles. I mean, her dad designed the rocket she rode on!

Now, this wasn't a bad book, and I did eventually come back every time I put it down, and I probably would read a sequel if one came out, but there were a lot of things that left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe a twelve-year-old who goes to a public schoool wouldn't have a problem with it, but I, a homeschooled 17 year old, did.

Just the right amount of headstrong girl to explorer (add a touch of getting into trouble)

I bought this for my granddaughter, but I preread all JV stories (just in case of inappropriate scenarios or language). This is book 1 and the author did a great job on plot and content. I can hardly wait for my granddaughter to read so we can add her thoughts to this review.

Clint makes it his mission to get Ricky out of his funk and out of that chair. Maybe if he can help Ricky stand up straight again, Clint will be able to do the same. But, not everyone in Alvarado is ready to welcome them into the community, leaving Clint and Ricky dealing with the possibility of being unwelcome home.

Wow...Just Wow!

This series is absolutely amazing! I couldn't wait to read Clint and Ricky's story and I was very excited that it was in Clint's point of view. Usually I knock down a star for spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors, and even though there were a few, it didn't take away from the story and the whole story line made up for it. I also love it when the author cross references characters from their other works or series, so when characters were brought up from The Stables series, I nearly lost it and now want to re-read the entire series. I cannot wait for more from this author and more in this series!

Welcome to Alvarado, 2 is titled Unwelcome Home by author C.E. Kilgore. This book has to be read in order, it is a direct play off of book one. All the characters come back in this book.
Clint a villain whom this book redeems. I didn't think a character that had done what Clint did could be brought back as a hero for a book, but Clint does. He comes out of prison for the crimes he did to Sam. He torn apart his small home town with one night of rage. He also torn apart himself. Now he knows who he is, a gay man. And he knows he has to make amends for what he has done. Clint is actually a great soul. He is a hard worker, great friend, and a thoughtful lover.
Ricky is in a wheel chair because of being beaten for being gay. He has given up hope. All his former sass and brass is gone. All that is left is the sadness and the what could have beens. That is where Clint finds him. But Clint being Clint does manage to bring Ricky back to the land of the living. I loved watching that unfold. They are not the most likely of friends but sometimes circumstances make you be friends with people you never thought you would.
I really love the angst, and love in this book. It feels natural not forced. I also cannot wait for more from this series. I am now hooked and must have more! I like how a contemporary MM, can hold so much story and love inside of it.

Good but needed more

I did like this story, but it felt like the characters got shortchanged in this one. Clint's character was a little better, only because part of his story was in book one. Ricky was in book one also, but not enough to know much about him below the surface. This story, building them into a couple, was incomplete. They have just a few interactions, a couple of sexual encounters and they're in love. No real connection was established for me. There was a lot of focus on Clint's emotions and handling the reactions of people he knew before prison. That was good, but left no room for relationship building with Ricky. Ricky's character was left on the sidelines, giving little insight to how he was feeling and reacting. This needed to be a longer book to include all the homophobia battles in the town. Just when I thought we'd get more of Ricky and Clint, another character was brought in and the story ended abruptly. Book one at least ended feeling complete. This book seemed like part one of a serial.

A Wonderful Resource

I checked this book out to use as a resource for a paper I was doing on St. Perpetua. I ended up reading more from the other chapters than the one I was supposed to be studying. This book has a wealth of information about many notable Medieval women. The chapter on Hildegard von Bingen and Marguerite Porete are of especial interest. There are also original Latin and French texts included for those who enjoy using primary sources.
