About the Author
Clear Englebert began working in retail at Montgomery Ward in Huntsville, Alabama when he was fifteen. Still a teenager, he became manager of the paperback department of Bookland's largest store. At nineteen, he opened his first Huntsville bookstore, called A Good Book Store. In 1978, Clear founded Books as Seeds, and in 1989, Opening Books (a 501c3 library and gift shop). He has managed at Green Apple Books (San Francisco's largest independent bookstore), at Pearly Gates Natural Foods in Huntsville, and at Ohana O Ka `Aina Natural Foods in Kona, Hawaii.

With decades of experience in retail visual merchandizing, Clear began a career as a feng shui consultant in Hawaii in 1995. He moved to San Francisco in 1996 to further his feng shui education. His first best-selling book, Feng Shui Demystified, was originally published in 2000 and was followed the next year with Bedroom Feng Shui. They have appeared in four languages and, after a decade, have been reissued in revised and expanded editions. Clear teaches feng shui in Hawaii and California and consults on homes, gardens, and commercial spaces.

Bravo! I read Feng Shui For Retail Stores in two short sessions and felt pleased to see that I include many of the suggested practices in my business, but I also gleaned several new concepts even after more than 37 years in retail. Clear Englebert has filtered and condensed his retail experience into a highly readable and concise guide that can be applied to a new business starting up as well as any established store. Many small but important details of customer service and daily procedures are discussed. I have asked my employees to read this book and recommend it highly to anyone in retail.

Great book that helped us make important shifts in the energy at our store

This is a really solid little book on retail feng shui, and I thought I knew a lot about feng shui - but I absolutely learned some things in this book that we have put to use in our store, and I feel they did improve the energy in the store and sales. If you manage, own or do displays in a retail store, this is a great and informative read that will have you looking at your store through new eyes, and I bet you anything you will be making a few changes afterwards! Very insightful, easy to understand, and she covers both simple/small changes and major changes you can make to correct the most common retail feng shui blunders.

Murach's HTML, XHTML, and CSS is an excellent introductory book for beginner programmers, and somewhat useful as a remedial work for intermediate ones like me.

PROS
---------------
+ Starts with the basics and explains them well
+ Works systematically to develop skills
+ Covers all of the major stuff you need for building a web-site
+ Teaches good practices
+ Well-organized

CONS
---------------
- Never moves to the intermediate level; I couldn't do more than just refresh basic skills (some of which were pretty rusty)
- I was hoping for more reference tables and the like--this is good for reading one time, but not for re-visiting

SUMMARY
----------------
This book is best read by beginners. I wish I would have had it when I was starting out. Intermediate and advanced programmers ought to look elsewhere. This series seems to have a lot of other computer programming books for more advanced work. Hopefully, they are as well-written as this one.

Excellent for beginners!

20-30 pages each (short & sweet writing).
"Paired pages", the Murach trademark (left page: explanation / right page: examples, brief descriptions, key points).
Fast and novice-friendly read.
Easily finish the book in a week (two chapters a day).
Two weeks if you take your time (one chapter a day).

Beginners:
Recommend one chapter a day, take your time.
Familiarize yourself with the syntax and tools. Key point: fully grasp the fundamental concepts.

Intermediate:
Good, fast refresher (2+ chapters a day).
Experienced with HTML but new to CSS and/or XHTML.

Advanced:
This book will probably bore you.
If you're already web development savvy and looking to beef up your skills, this book is not for you.

My tip:
The book recommends using Notepad++ for Windows users.
I suggest using Microsoft's Visual Web Developer Express as well (both are free).
Reasons being:
FORMAT DOCUMENT function: keep your code clean, structured, and easier to examine.
REAL-TIME VALIDATION: instead of validating through W3C website after coding to find errors.
Easy introduction to using an IDE while learning coding at the same time.
** note: you'll get a warning using W3C's website validation because VWD encodes the file in UTF-8 with BOM,
you can open the file in Notepad++ when your finished and convert it to UTF-8 without BOM to pass the W3C validation.

After completion:
I highly recommend Murach's Javascript and DOM Scripting.

A comparison to the Head First book.

I'm not going to rehash what others are saying about this book. I just want to add my two cents. I've read the Head First HTML book, which is a very good start, but a lot of the things that are covered in this book (like working with mobile devices, how to format just about anything using CSS, and working with audio and video) are missing in the Head First book because this one came out in 2010, while the Head First book hasn't been updated since 2006. The other thing I like about this book is that the full explanation comes before the exercises. That way, you can read the material on the go without having to have a computer next to you. Then, you can use your computer when doing the exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercises are very important and help a great deal. Instead of telling you everything to do, they give you a chance to figure things out yourself. IMHO, that's the best way to learn. I also liked the tone of this book. To me, it seems that Head First treats you like a 12 year old, while this one talks to you like you're an adult. One last thing I'd like to mention is that I learned more about forms, tables, and CSS by reading this one.

Excellent Quality

I had never heard of Emmanuel Fouquet before a few weeks ago, but I'm quickly becoming a fan of his work. This book, Hot 19, and Love Heat all have similar (and very high) quality, and I would highly recommend any and all of them. My personal opinion when it comes to nude photography (and my personal preference is women) the emphasis should be on accentuating the models' beauty and sexuality, and Mr. Fouquet does that very well (not to mention that all of the models are very attractive).

PAUL J. ZAK, Ph.D., is professor of economic psychology and management at Claremont Graduate University. As the founding director of Claremont's Center for Neuroeconomics Studies, he is at the vanguard of neuroeconomics, a new discipline that integrates neuroscience and economics. He has a popular Pyschology Today blog called The Moral Molecule. He makes numerous media appearances, and his research has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Scientific American, Fast Company, and many others.

New Ideas, Great Writing

The molecule is oxytocin. You might be familiar with it from its role in inducing childbirth and lactation. It actually plays a huge role in maternal behavior, as well as pair bonding and pro-social behavior in general. You get a surge of it when you have sex, get a hug, see a baby, hear from an old friend. Its reputation as the love drug is well deserved.

Zak did a couple of interesting things with this hormone. First, he studied it, in a lab setting. Second, he used it to come up with a pretty comprehensive model that explains a lot of human behavior.

Zak's experiments were rather unusual. For one thing, he actually took blood to measure subjects' oxytocin levels. For another, he concentrated on typical economics experiments (the ultimatum game, for example). That's why what he's done has been jokingly called "vampire economics."

What he found is pretty interesting stuff, and basically lays to rest the old notion of homo economicus - the old "reasonable man" acting in his own "rational self-interest." This may be surprising only to economists, but Zak found that people are as emotional as they are rational, and that doing unto others makes you feel pretty darn good and is as much a motivator - if not more - than acquisitiveness.

This leads into his model where oxytocin starts a virtuous cycle of trust, caring, and all sorts of good stuff. He contrasts that with a vicious cycle based on testosterone. He then uses these models and his findings to speculate about quite a bit. For example, he:

* Speculates about the pro-social aspect of testosterone (e.g., enforcing norms)
* Wonders about both hormones' influence on the origin of religion
* Uses a lack of oxytocin to explain autistic and psychopathic behavior
* Finds that Republican have less oxytocin than Democrats and independents

Zak is also an excellent writer. Great stories, humor, and a style that makes for very easy reading.

My only reservations were for the last two chapters, where he goes a little overboard with his speculations. These chapters are not as closely tied to experiments, and get quite wooly, full of platitudes, and somewhat over-blown.

Overall, though, this is one of the best books I've read in quite awhile.

Good to trust

This book is about the hormone oxytocin (which is principally a female hormone but also present in the male). This hormone is the molecule referred to in the title of the book. "Am I actually saying that a single molecule...accounts for why some people give freely of themselves and others are coldhearted bastards, why some people cheat and steal and others you can trust with your life, why some husbands are more faithful than others, and, by the way, why some women tend to be more generous - and nicer - than men?" asks the author Paul Zak. "In a word, yes" he answers.

This molecule as Zak calls it, is a "feel good" hormone that increases when we do simple, feel good things like giving or receiving a hug, or when we give generously. The act of giving stimulates this hormone resulting in the recipient desiring to trust the giver. Zak explains that there is also a counter hormone ("testosterone") which he calls the "bad boy" hormone that increases the impulse to take risk and behave badly. However, testosterone is necessary for physical courage and strength. Thus, the mammalian animal evolved with these two hormones balancing each other and so many of the unusual behavior Zak says, can be attributed to an imbalance of those hormones.

From the general effects and the origin of this hormone in the evolutionary process, Zak discusses specific topics such as the effect of oxytocin deprivation in orphans. He also discusses the influence of oxytocin inclining people to religion. Zak believes, however, that religion serves a useful purpose regardless of whether God exists or not. Some parts of his theory concerning the connections between oxytocin in early civilisations may be controversial insofar as he postulates that oxytocin influence on the feel good factor leads people to have warm feelings which are interpreted as "love" and its connection to sex, and from there to procreation and creation. So maybe for the religious God is love but for scientists like Zak, love is God. It is a fascinating and illuminating book on the whole if one is interested in what makes us tick.

Terrific science combined with storytelling

Paul Zak. Remember the name. No, you need not. His name will come back time and again. He is a shooting star in economics and neuroeconomics. Moral Moelcule is a terrific book. Great science and great storytelling. In traditional economics, morality is an add-on. Something that must be constructed or realized through man-made rules and constitutional constraints on people's collective decision making, and for market-based decision making to work at all. Zak points to how such constraints might not have a prayer of making markets viable without the evolved chemistry of the brain that makes cooperation and trust self-rewarding. Great read, and I felt compelled to post this comment after the first four chapters, in spite of the fact that his arguments are unsettling for me as a traditional economist. I look forward to spending time with the rest of the book. Take a glimpse of the future of economics through this book. Very highly recommended.

About the Author
Stephen Knapp has studied the major Vedic texts of India and practiced yoga and the Eastern teachings since 1971. He has traveled throughout India and has a collection of over 18,000 slides and images of the many holy places, temples and festivals he has seen. He has authored over twenty-five well-received books on Vedic culture and Eastern spirituality. He also regularly gives lectures at various venues both in America and in India. He has also been involved in the management of various temples for over 40 years, and is the president of the Vedic Friends Association. Vedic India Once Ruled the World

Fantastic.Stupendous. Mind Boggling. Stephen my son you have rendered yeoman service to Sanatan Dharma and the Vedic World . From 1966 my guru Purushottam Nagesh Oak wrote about Taj Mahal being an erstwhile Rajput Palace and how Vedic culture shines through the layers of civilization. I see how Stephen has been inspired by his work. In particular Stephen has put on the internet all the photographs of how the Taj Mahal has seven storeys, sealed areas, hidden chambers etc etc and he has brilliantly followed in the footsteps of Oak jee and his mind blowing work " Word Vedic Heritage. God bless you Stephen. But wait there is more. He details how the Mayan constructions like Macchu Picchu are fundamentally Vedic structures relying on the ancient Vedic Text of Architecture or our Shilpa Shastra.. and further he details how Chitzen Itsa is laid out in the Vedic Feng Shui or Vastu principles.. so you have three Modern Wonders of the World Taj Mahal, Macchu Picchu and Chitzen Itsa all Vedic structures.. A great work on Vedic Dharma, a Must Read.

This is a great work by one of the top Vedic and Hindu scholars in the West, Stephen Knapp has studied, practiced and researched Hinduism for a lifetime and is a great write, he has written many books on Hinduism and this is another 'Must Read'.
