Exercises in Dynamic Macroeconomic Theory, by Rodolfo E. Manuelli, Thomas J. Sargent

This book is a companion volume to Dynamic Macroeconomic Theory by Thomas J. Sargent. It provides scrimmages in dynamic macroeconomic theory--precisely the kind of drills that people will need in order to learn the techniques of dynamic programming and its applications to economics. By doing these exercises, the reader can acquire the ability to put the theory to work in a variety of new situations, build technical skill, gain experience in fruitful ways of setting up problems, and learn to distinguish cases in which problems are well posed from cases in which they are not. The basic framework provided by variants of a dynamic general equilibrium model is used to analyze problems in macroeconomics and monetary economics. An equilibrium model provides a mapping from parameters of preferences, technologies, endowments, and "rules of the game" to a probability model for time series. The rigor of the logical connections between theory and observations that the mapping provides is an attractive feature of dynamic equilibrium, or "rational expectations," models. This book gives repeated and varied practice in constructing and interpreting this mapping.

Chieftains, by Bob Forrest-Webb

During the late 1970s and early 80s tension in Europe, between east and west, had grown until it appeared that war was virtually unavoidable. Soviet armies massed behind the 'Iron Curtain' that stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea.

In the west, Allied forces, British, American, and armies from virtually all the western countries, raised the levels of their training and readiness. A senior British army officer, General Sir John Hackett, had written a book of the likely strategies of the Allied forces if a war actually took place and, shortly after its publication, he suggested to his publisher Futura that it might be interesting to produce a novel based on the Third World War but from the point of view of the soldier on the ground.

Bob Forrest-Webb, an author and ex-serviceman who had written several best-selling novels, one of which became a Disney film, was commissioned to write the book. As modern warfare tends to be extremely mobile, and as a worldwide event would surely include the threat of atomic weapons, it was decided that the book would mainly feature the armoured divisions already stationed in Germany facing the growing number of Soviet tanks and armoured artillery.

With the assistance of the Ministry of Defence, Forrest-Webb undertook extensive research that included visits to various armoured regiments in the UK and Germany, and a large number of interviews with veteran members of the Armoured Corps, men who had experienced actual battle conditions in their vehicles from mined D-Day beaches under heavy fire, to warfare in more recent conflicts.

It helped that Forrest-Webb's father-in-law, Bill Waterson, was an ex-Armoured Corps man with thirty years of service; including six years of war combat experience in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and finally Austria. He's still remembered at Bovington, Dorset, which is still an Armoured Corps base, and also home to the best tank museum in the world.

Forrest-Webb believes in realism; realism in speech, and in action. The characters in his book behave as the men in actual tanks and in actual combat behave. You can smell the oil fumes and the sweat and gun-smoke in his writing. Armour is the spearhead of the army; like its men it has to be hard, and sharp. The book is reputed to be the best novel ever written about tank warfare and is being re-published because that's what the guys in the tanks today have requested. When first published, the colonel of one of the armoured regiments stationed in Germany gave a copy to Princess Anne when she visited their base. When read by General Sir John Hackett, he stated: "A dramatic and authentic account", and that's what 'Chieftains' is.

'Chieftains' e-book has approximately 256 pages.

Ending was too abrupt
By Brent Fernandez
It was getting really good - the characters were coming into their own, the situation was really intense, with a huge twist. Then the book ended. No elaboration, nothing. Just abruptly finished. Disappointing really. If there were a follow-up book or something, the ending might make sense as more of a bridge... but no.

Great book until the end
By ScottL
If you like Red Storm Rising, Team Yankee, etc, then this book will be right up your alley. Very good, very gripping book right up until the end. I won't spoil the ending, but it's incredibly disappointing.

Having been a British Squaddie during the 70's & 80's, I think this book is spot on. Anybody who served in Germany/BAOR at the time will find it a really good read.

Buy it. That's an order ;)

Ships and Men in the Late Viking Age: The Vocabulary of Runic Inscriptions and Skaldic Verse, by Judith Jesch

The Vikings were the master mariners and ship-builders of the middle ages: their success depended on these skills. Spectacular archaeological finds of whole or partial ships, from burial mounds or dredged from harbours, continue to give new and exciting evidence of their practical craftsmanship and urge to seek new shores. The nautical vocabulary of the Viking Age, however, has been surprisingly neglected - the last comprehensive study was published in 1912 and was heavily dependent on post-Viking Age sources. Far better contemporary sources from the later Viking Age are available to document the activities of men and their uses of ships from c.950-1100, and Judith Jesch undertakes in this book the first systematic and comparative study of such evidence. The core is a critical survey of the vocabulary of ships and their crews, of fleets and sailing and battles at sea, based on runic inscriptions and skaldic evidence from c.950-1100. This nautical vocabulary is studied within the larger context of "viking" activity in this period: what that activity was and where it took place, its social and military aspects, and its impact on developments in the nature of kingship in Scandinavia. JUDITH JESCH is Reader in Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham, and author of Women in the Viking Age.

Serious research for the serious scholar
By Jane T. Sibley
Dr. Jesch keeps getting better and better. I have a number of her books and papers, and this one is a keeper. Just got it for Yule, and can't put it down. Of course, it helps if the reader is somewhat familiar with the runic tradition, as well as the sagas. Excellent illos (runes came out nice & clear) and clearly written, with an extensive bibliography, index, and footnotes. Probably the best researched volume on the topic of Viking period ships and the men who sailed in them. It's not a fast read, but it is chock full of details and information.

good strong coverage of Oracle 8i backup and recovery
By Garry Flemings
The first five chapters of this book have good technical information, but could be better if expressed more clearly. Forget that! The other five chapters have great technical information and got through to me very well. Chapter 10 is a set of 22 valuable "case studies" in which the authors simulate a set of failures they say are representative of DBAs' most common problems. For each, they explain the right DBA reactions; sometimes they explain other reactions and why those are aren't as useful. Good connections with Oracle. Strong technical credibility. Great explanations in the second half. Valuable!

Profit from the Core: A Return to Growth in Turbulent Times, by Chris Zook, James Allen

When Profit from the Core was published in 2001, it became an international bestseller, helping hundreds of companies find their way back to profitable growth after the bursting of the Internet bubble. The 2007 global financial meltdown reaffirmed the perils of pursuing heady growth through untested strategies, as firms in industries from finance to retailing to automobiles strayed too far from their core businesses and suffered the consequences.

In this updated edition of Profit from the Core, authors Chris Zook and James Allen show that a renewed focus on the core is more critical than ever as firms seek to rebuild their competitive advantage coming out of the downturn—and that a strong core will be the foundation for successful expansion as the economy recovers. Based on more than ten years of Bain & Company research and analysis and fresh examples from firms responding to the current downturn, the book outlines what today’s executives and managers need to do now to revitalize their core, identify the next wave of profitable growth, and build on it successfully.

Zook and Allen explain how companies can:

• Develop a strong, well-defined core and use it to establish a leadership position
• Follow the golden rule of strategy: discourage competitors from investing in your core
• Assess whether your core is operating at its full potential
• Uncover hidden assets in your core that provide the seeds for new growth
• Find a repeatable formula to apply core business strengths in adjacent markets

Building on powerful and proven ideas to meet today’s formidable business challenges, Profit from the Core is the back-to-basics strategy field guide no manager should be without.

An operations manual, compass, and mine detector for achieving sustainable and profitable growth
By Robert Morris
In this Updated Edition of Profit from the Core published by Harvard Business Press (2010) and written with James Allen, Chris Zook provides updated key examples while adding new ones and renders "the lessons learned in a way that management teams can use can use as a tool to reflect on the way forward in today's economy."

Given what Zook characterizes as "the current structural crisis in business," referring to developments during the "turbulent times" since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, here are the key points he lists in the Preface:

* Sustained and profitable growth requires a strong, well-defined core.

* Most sustained profitable growth companies have leadership positions in their cores that form the epicenters of their strategies.

* The number-one rule of strategy is to discourage your customers from investing in your core.

* The greatest source of strategic error, he and associates [at Bain] find, stems from an inaccurate understanding of the core and its full potential.

* Strong cores often contain hidden assets that prove to be the seeds of the next wave of growth - the topic of his previous book, Unstoppable.

* The key to sustained and profitable growth is to find a repeatable formula that utilizes the most powerful and differentiated strengths in your core and applies them to a series of new "adjacent" markets.

Zook's concept of "core" bears striking resemblance to Jim Collins' concept of the "Three Circles"," introduced in Good to Great: (a) What a company can be the best in the world at (and equally important, what it cannot be the best in the world at), (2) What drives the company's economic engine, and (3) What those in the company care most passionately about. For Zook, a core business "as that set of products, capabilities, customers, channels, and geographies that defines the essence of what the company is or aspires to be to achieve its growth mission - that is, to grow its revenue sustainably and profitably...The essence of a company's growth strategy is to define the core business as we have defined it and to pour company resources into this core business until it achieves its full potential."

Of special interest to me is what Zook has to say about five paradoxes that most management teams encounter when seeking to revitalize the growth of their company. They usually focus on the underperforming units. Zook and Allen argue that "growth requires instead on increasing the performance of the best businesses, no matter how well they are doing at present. Why? Paradox #1: The better performing of business units are likely to be those operating the furthest below their full potential. When discussing adjacency expansion, they introduce Paradox #2: "The stronger your core business, the more opportunities you have both to move into profitable adjacencies and to lose focus." When addressing when and how to redefine a core business, they introduce Paradox #3: "The management teams that have been most successful in building a strong core business and that have benefited from adjacency expansion are also the most vulnerable to industry turbulence." In Chapter 5, they provide some guidelines for the process of developing and refining growth strategy, then introduce Paradox #4: "All organizations inhibit growth...Overlying all the analysis in this book is a final paradox: From focus comes growth; by narrowing growth one creates expansion."

In order to continue creating value, it is eventually necessary for any company to invest in adjacencies. There are three basic types: a direct move into an immediate opportunity (e.g. Enterprise Rent-a-Car); an "option" purchased in a business related to the core, functioning as a hedge against future uncertainties (e.g. Intel and Microsoft); and a series of sequential moves that expand the boundaries and capabilities of the core business (e.g. Cisco's acquisition of Pure Digital Technologies). Whichever approach is selected, there are certain "pitfalls" that must be avoided. They are identified in Chapter 5 and there are seven of them: expanding toward an entrenched position, overestimating the profit pool, false bundling (of products, services, or both), invaders from unexpected directions, failing to consider all adjacencies, missing a new segment, and single-mindedly (stubbornly?) pursuing high-end adjacencies. They are thoroughly discussed on Pages 97-105.

In the final chapter, Zook poses ten questions that he and Allen believe management teams should periodically ask themselves about their companies and at the start if every review of their basic growth strategy. Here are the first three:

1. What is the most rightly defined profitable core of our business, and is it gaining or losing strength?

2. What defines the boundaries of the business that we are competing for, and where are those boundaries going to shift in the future?

3. Are there new competitors currently at the fringe of our business that pose potential longer-term threats to the core?

Long ago during one of his first meetings with the Green Bay Packers, Coach Vince Lombardi stood next to a blackboard, held up a piece of chalk, and claimed, "I can beat any offense or defense with this." The same is true of asking questions such as those that Zook and Allen pose when concluding the final chapter. In football it is far more difficult to execute the right strategies than it is to present them on a blackboard but you need to do both. In business it is far more difficult to formulate the right answers than it is to ask the right question but, again, you must do both.

In this Updated Edition of a book first published in 2001, Chris Zook with James Allen provide a wealth of information and counsel that a management team needs in its quest for sustainable and profitable growth. I agree with them that turbulent conditions create "confusion, blurred boundaries, less time to react, less tolerance for error, and often fewer resources" but they also create "unique opportunities to strengthen and expand string cores, and even to invest to reshape the structure of [its] industry ahead of competitors." For those in need of an operations manual, compass, and mine detector, here it is.

One of my 3 favorite business books
By Rob L
Profit From the Core is without a doubt one of my favorite business books. I rank it alongside Winning Decisions and The Goal.

This book is from the perspective of manager's wanting to achieve corporate growth, but the myriad concepts are so powerful they can be adapted to departmental strategies, evaluating corporations, mergers & acquisitions and even to designing one's own career strategy.

The updated edition from 2010 includes examples that are relevant in today's post financial meltdown world. No per-requisites should be required. It is a must read for those wanting to improve their business strategy acumen, and useful if you want to exercise your strategic thinking in general.

Good example of the focus strategy
By Jackal
Michael Porter introduced the focus/niche strategy in his 1980 book. The current book is a modern reincarnation of the idea and was published in 2001. The key argument is that the core of the organisation often has more growth opportunities that commonly perceived. This is a good and valid elaboration. I can recommend this well-written book with interesting examples. However, you should be aware that the book does not contain a lot of novelty.

The author has a follow-up book Beyond the Core: Expand Your Market Without Abandoning Your Roots, which I cannot recommend at all. Its focus is on growth-areas outside the core. This is a great idea, except that the 2001 book already has a chapter on growing through adjacencies (i.e. related diversification.) The second book is just more of the same.

Excellent! Required reading for any true Rock & Roll fan.
By A Customer
This book does an excellent job of telling the story of what Led Zeppelin was all about. The text is extremely well written, and the photographs are incomparable. Through mostly visual images anyone, even an outsider to the Zeppelin story can get an accurate idea of why the four band members did what they did, and the passion that went into their work. Led Zeppelin was a band made up of talented musicians who loved their music. They fought long and hard to stay true to their idea of what rock and roll was all about. Anyone who feels that Nirvana or Pearl Jam is the best rock (it's all rock, no matter what you call it) band ever needs to read this book. Eddie Vedder can fight Ticket Master "for the fans", and Kurt Cobain may have taken his own life, but remember, Led Zeppelin never released "Stairway to Heaven" as a single. Wonder why?

Gotta Read This One
By David Terralavoro
This book came out in 1991, the history is accurate (where did you learn the riff to "the Crunge" was written in 1964?) The book covers what not too many books cover - the collectivity of some of the records, Some of the major LZ fans contributed to this book so thats good enough for me. I enjoyed reading it ( it took me 3 sessions to do so.) There are actually three authors for this book (although one is Neal Preston - he contributed photos.) Four stars!

Butcher's Crossing (New York Review Books Classics), by John Williams

In his National Book Award–winning novel Augustus, John Williams uncovered the secrets of ancient Rome. With Butcher’s Crossing, his fiercely intelligent, beautifully written western, Williams dismantles the myths of modern America.

It is the 1870s, and Will Andrews, fired up by Emerson to seek “an original relation to nature,” drops out of Harvard and heads west. He washes up in Butcher’s Crossing, a small Kansas town on the outskirts of nowhere. Butcher’s Crossing is full of restless men looking for ways to make money and ways to waste it. Before long Andrews strikes up a friendship with one of them, a man who regales Andrews with tales of immense herds of buffalo, ready for the taking, hidden away in a beautiful valley deep in the Colorado Rockies. He convinces Andrews to join in an expedition to track the animals down. The journey out is grueling, but at the end is a place of paradisal richness. Once there, however, the three men abandon themselves to an orgy of slaughter, so caught up in killing buffalo that they lose all sense of time. Winter soon overtakes them: they are snowed in. Next spring, half-insane with cabin fever, cold, and hunger, they stagger back to Butcher’s Crossing to find a world as irremediably changed as they have been.

Review
"One of the finest books about the elusive nature of the West ever written...It's a graceful and brutal story of isolated men gone haywire." --Time Out New York

"Harsh and relentless yet muted in tone, Butcher's Crossing paved the way for Cormac McCarthy. It was perhaps the first and best revisionist western." --The New York Times Book Review

"One of the finest novels of the West ever to come out of the West."--The Denver Post

"Williams didn't write much compared with some novelists, but everything he did was exceedingly fine...it's a shame that he's not more often read today...But it's great that at least two of his novels [Stoner, Butcher's Crossing] have found their way back into print." --The Denver Post

“Reading John Williams–even to have done so at the time these novels were written–is an exercise in nostalgia, a nostalgia found also in writers like Willa Cather, for whom the West represented a lost redoubt of intellectual dignity...It is tempting to say that Cather's tradition flagged because the West has changed – it is no longer anybody's bildungsroman–but it is safer to say that writers as talented and right-minded as John Williams are not naturally plentiful.” –New York Sun

This story about the hunt of one of the last great buffalo herds "becomes a young man's search for the integrity of his own being...The characters are defined, the events lively, the place, the smells, the sounds right. And the prose is superb, a rarity in writing about the west. More, John Williams."--The Chicago Tribune

"John Williams's unsparing novels express a highly qualified though resilient optimism about our ability to salvage something of value from life's impossible conditions. Along with the necessary isolation of the artist, he conveys the sobering if startled recognition--perhaps with his own career in mind--of the transi...

Brilliant! On a Par with McCarthy's BLOOD MERIDIAN
By Steve Koss
If such a thing as the Great American Novel can be said to exist, it would very likely encompass the country's 19th Century westward expansion. After all, it was this irresistible land grab - with its ruthless expulsion and genocide of native Americans, its hunting to exinction of buffalo, and its struggles against Nature in search of the better life - that defined America's cultural personality and self-image for the following 150 - 200 years. The rootless but ever-hopeful individualist, the lonely conqueror of Nature, the rugged Marlboro Man begat the robber barons and industrialists, the real estate, oil, and hedge fund tycoons, the Internet entrepreneurs, and even the self-righteous, Iraq-invading neoconservatives.

Amazingly, John Williams's utterly brilliant BUTCHER'S CROSSING - perhaps, indeed, THE Great American Novel - appears to have gone largely unnoticed among the general reading public. Published in 1960, five years before the author's equally impressive STONER and 25 years before Cormac McCarthy's deservedly renowned BLOOD MERIDIAN, BUTCHER'S CROSSING encapsulates many of the American West's mythologies. Yet Williams is hardly a romantic in his interpretation. He presents the opening West as harsh and brutal, populated by socially challenged obsessives who view the land and everything in it as their private domains, seized by choice and held by force of will and gun.

Williams's ostensible hero is William Andrews, fresh from three years at Harvard and seeking an adventure in the West with a childlike enthusiasm and understanding. His mind filled by a romantic, Emerson-inspired view of Nature and his pockets filled with an inheritance from his uncle, Andrews heads for the decidedly uninspired, six-building town of Butcher's Crossing, Kansas. Within a matter of days, greenhorn Will has met the local buffalo hide trader McDonald and a long-time buffalo hunter named Miller. The traditional hunting grounds in Kansas have already been depleted to the point where only small herds of a few hundred animals can be found. However, Miller had discovered a hidden mountain valley in Colorado nine years earlier teeming with buffalo and has been waiting for enough money to finance the expedition. In return for accompanying the party as an apprentice hide skinner, Andrews underwrites the hunt. Miller recruits his neurotic sidekick, the Bible-beating Charley Hoge as the wagon man and a taciturn German named Schneider as their skinner. While Miller is away purchasing the necessary supplies, Will meets a prostitute named Francine. She falls for his soft hands and not yet hardened heart, but the immature Will is frightened off by her aggressive sexuality.

The bulk of BUTCHER'S CROSSING concerns the journey to find the buffalo, Miller's rediscovery of his Shangri-la valley, the hunt itself, the life-threatening storms the group endures, and finally, the difficult return trip to Butcher's Crossing to sell their hides. Along the way, Williams's book becomes a classic coming of age story, a discourse on ecology and species survival, and the story of an irrational, Ahab-like obsession that nearly ends in the men's destruction. In the end, Williams levies his own ironic form of judgment against Miller and McDonald for their repeated violations of Nature. Despite reconciling his feelings for Francine on his return to town, Andrews's future in the West is left deliberately uncertain. Perhaps he has finally learned to live with and respect Nature and will eventually find his rightful place. Or perhaps he, too, will be punished for his sins, forever banished to wandering the wilds alone, scarred by the real-life education he so enthusiastically sought from Miller.

Throughout the book, Williams's writing is sparse and direct, unsparing in its treatment of the men's deprivations and the bloodiness of the hunt. His characters are distinctive and memorable; although we never see deeply inside them, we know them for the archetypes they are. Dialog is limited and short, as these are men of few words. The overall effect of the writing remarkably prefigures that of Cormac McCarthy without the density and compound, run-on sentences, resulting in a highly readable and deeply engaging page turner. Fans of McCarthy will certainly appreciate Williams's accomplishment here, but I believe BUTCHER'S CROSSING merits a much wider audience. This is a magnificent but regrettably under-recognized work of literature that feels timeless in its writing style and enduring in its themes.

Another amazing John Williams novel
By Ronald H. Clark
This is the third of John Williams' major novels I have read, although it preceded his other two significant novels, "Stoner" and "Augustus." Williams is just amazing: this novel (purportedly about a buffalo hunt in Colorado in the late 19th century) is entirely different from "Stoner" (set in an academic setting in early to mid 20th century Missouri), which in turn is entirely different from "Augustus" which focuses upon the first real Roman emperor. Yet, each novel speaks with an authenticity that is truly unique. As is true with the author's other two novels, there is more at issue here than just a buffalo hunt. His carefully structured narrative raises issues of the closing of the frontier, man v. nature, loyalty and honor, and the dynamics of human interaction. His style is also different from "Stoner," which was as lean a novel as I have read; here there is much more description, dialogue, and setting the stage. This very fine New York Review of Books edition (which also published "Stoner") is well crafted and has a helpful introduction my Michelle Latiolais, a former student of Williams. Amongst other things we learn that Williams in effect smoked himself to death, dying from emphysema. What a loss. We also learn from her introduction that some consider this book "the finest western ever written." Well, I guess it is sort of a western, though the characters don't wear funny hats and carry six-shooters; I prefer to think of it as a great novel set in the west rather than necessarily a "western." A truly magnificant work of literary craftsmanship and a great reading experience.

Camus in the American West
By Jakfo
Poetic prose. Intense descriptions that almost threaten you enough with its unbearable inevitibility to stop your reading--see the buffalo massacre. Existential scenery and action throughout. A minimalist style that sculpts the story neatly. Butcher's Crossing is in the American vein of Cooper's Leather Stocking Tales--see The Priarie-; lifts the "Western" story telling above Oakly Hall and Cormack McCarthy, taking it to a new level--as Jarmusch did in his Western film Dead Man and beyond Eastwood's High Plains Drifter; Butcher's Crossing is a cowboy novel Camus would have written had he located The Stranger in America rather than Africa. Yet this is a great American novel regardless of setting that explores the energies and desires, drives and values that propel American society. The ending is as difficult to bear as the buffalo hunt--the metaphor of both and the novel overall leaves you inspired and disturbed. One of the best books I have ever read from an almost anonymous American novelist.

Last note: John Williams' other novels, Stoner and Augustus are equally amazing works of writing, literature and art.

John Williams should be required reading for every student of literature, at least. For people who love to read great writing, he is mandatory.

An excellent coverage of Kerala history!
By Sam Santhosh
Kerala is a small strip of land in the south west extreme tip of the Indian peninsula, about 580 km in length and 35-120 Km in breadth. Protected by the Western Ghat mountain ranges on one side and the Arabian Ocean on the other side, Kerala was able to develop a very unique identity with its own language (Malayalam), culture, cuisine, art forms, medicine and so on. Trade through the coast from 3000 BC onwards ensured cultural contact with China, Arabs and the Western world, and passes through the mountain ranges, with the rest of the India. Visitors and refugees from all over the world have from time immemorial come to Kerala and were welcomed with open arms. Thus Kerala can boast of an ancient Jewish synagogue, Christian churches, Muslim mosques and Hindu temples dotted across its geography.

However there are not many books on Kerala history, though Prof Sreedhara Menon is well known in Kerala and India as an authority on this subject. Most of his books though are meant for the serious reader, but Menon through his `Kerala History and its Makers' brings the subject to the common man. In thirty seven chapters with each chapter dedicated to a prominent personality or group, Menon provides a continuous account of Kerala history from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Early visitors like St.Thomas in first century BC, to later ones who left a major impact like Vasco De Gama, Dr.Herman Gundert and Robert Bristow are covered in their respective chapters.

All heroes of Kerala like Kunjahil Marakkar, Martanda Varma, Pazhassi Raja and Veluthampy Dalawa are given their due coverage. Contributions to religion, art, culture and poetry from Sankaracharya, Tunchat Ezhuthachan, Kunchan Nambiar, Swati Thirunal are adequately acknowledged. Though Kathakali gets its own chapter, Ayurveda (traditional medicine), and Kalaripayatu (martial art form) are somewhat neglected.

The narrative is easy to read and anybody interested in Kerala will get a very unbiased picture of its history and culture through this book.
