One of the Best Children's Books Ever Written

This book was the reason I started reading at 5! After getting too impatient waiting for my father to read one chapter at a time every evening, I was determined to read it myself. And so I did, along with its two sequels. This is a beautiful, majestic collection that will definitely entice children into reading it. It teaches the true value of friendship, which is something that should be understood at an early age. As compared to the present day's Harry Potter, this book is full of fantastic reality, but without darkness and cruelty. It should definitely be published in English for mass distribution!

I consider the publication of this book and its sequels a pinnacle moment in children's literature. Perhaps I sound overly dramatic, but this book is the ultimate in great writing. Karlsson On The Roof is written by Astrid Lindgren, the world's premier writer of children's literature with higher book sales than Dr. Seuss. It is certainly a shame that so many of her books are not published in English when she flourishes elsewhere. Karlsson On the Roof is by far the best book by this terrificly prolific author. It is a wonderfully whimsical feast of a book and it continues to sweep me away into greater heights of my imagination.
PS - I have sent a protest letter to Viking Penguin stating the reasons why this classic should be republished in English. Let's hope this gets somewhere!

Good stuff!!

Read both books and loved the characters and the plot. I am wondering about Cindy though and can't wait for number 3. Marcy and Rick are such a great couple and I have a feeling we will hear from that bitch, Cindy again. I would love for Marcy to get a hold of her again. and take care of her meddling ways!!! I'm looking forward to reading the next installment of the Rocking series.

Ok definitely has to be the fastest I have ever read two books back to back but I absolutely could not put this book down! I love Jax and Esme, they are the perfect couple!

With book one leaving you hanging about what happens with Esme, any reader will want to dive right into Rocking Scarlett and want to know what happens! Jax is such a sweet snd caring guy, especially for a rocker, and he definitely goes above and beyond in this book. He will definitely make any female reader swoon :-)

Amazing job on these first two books and I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!!

This series is still rocking!

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This series keeps getting better. Still told in multiple POVs this a fast paced drama filled book just like the first one. You can really tell the authors are getting better with their writing. This book picks right up after the cliffhanger at the end of the first and of course there is a lot of drama still going on with Cindy. Loved the epilogue to this amazing love story between Esme and Jackson. Looking forward to reading about Marcy next.

A small leap into the Abyss of Mysticism

If it were not for this book, I would never have encountered the wealth of mystical traditions of different religions in my home town in dreary West Texas. Now I find it more of an introduction rather than anything else. There are sections devoted to different religious traditions, beginning in a somewhat chronological order.

The section on Tribal and Aboriginal mysticism is extremely insightful on the ideas of animism and respect for nature.

Hinduism is my second favorite section. It is by this book I was introduced to the wonderful insights of Sri Aurobindo Ghose. The little excerpts I read opened my mind to this giant of Vedantic thought. After this, I purchased the Life Divine and Savitri, which have been among the most impactful pieces of literature on my life's view.

The sections on Buddhism, Taoism, Greek Religion, and Islam were deeply insightful. I was also introduced to the Sufi mystic Ibn Arabi who has also been an inspiration in my life.

Judaism in this book is more focused on the idea of rabbinic traditions, also including Kabbalah. The selections were adequate to gain a grasp of the concepts of the mystical tradition but are rather lacking.

The section on Christianity is my personal favorite with the variety of content. One can see how the idea of a personal relationship with God emerge and evolve over the history of the Church and more recent movements. The selection from John Ruusbroec is very deep. Usual mystics such as St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross were prevalent. Some protestant mystics were included, along with some quotes of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and also Bede Griffiths on the uniformity of mystical experience between faiths.

Nevertheless the book is a great buy, not too expensive but a great start for those interested in approaching some mystical path. There is a bibliography included for the original and/or related texts of those presented in the book.

This book is an easy read and offers practical insights to numerous mystical traditions. It opens with Native American "voices" telling us that we have to re-connect with nature and the "majesty of the universe." It touches on eight paths to a more spiritual life, and explains how many of the traditions interrelate. This book is for the seeker with few preconceived ideas and opinions about what is Truth. It assists those interested in integrating ideas from various cultures into any of the mainstream religions.

The first American to receive the Silver Medal of the British Horological Institute, he served as president of the New York City Horological Society and the New York State Watchmakers Association and vice president of the old Horological Institute of America. He taught and lectured on horology and served as an industry consultant. He also was a consultant for the Random House Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

A great gift!

I have this most recent 2012 paperback edition, and I couldn't be happier. My interest in horology inspired my wife to buy me this book and I have already put it to good use. With the help of this thorough textual and visual guide to cleaning and repair, I have got my old watch working again, and I'm excited to do more! The troubleshooting section was particularly helpful. I recommend this to all persons interested in watch repairs!

a perfect book for the beginning watchmaker

This is the best beginner's guide to mechanical watch repair. Some things have changed since it was written, but the basics that are covered in this book have not. Reading this book, though it is technologically dated, will render no false or bad impressions on the reader. There is no other author with both the command of the subject and the ability to teach it effectively as Fried, a legend in the field. Illustrated perfectly, it will make it possible from knowing nothing to knowing a great deal. Highly recommend accompanying this course of study with practical lessons.

Not for the beginner

This book was published for the first time in 1949: the narrative and graphics are perhaps relevant for that "age" but substandard for 2014. If you are trying to navigate for the first time in the world of "understanding" and repairing watches this is not a motivating start point. I would say that it's "too technical" and the possibilities to understand are very dimmed in part because of the poor graphics (b&w), the technical jargon used from beginning to end, etc. It is like you for the first time want to learn math and in your first lesson the teacher starts with integral and derivative calculus. Even for seasoned watchmakers I guess exist books with better designed lessons and graphics.

On May 17, 2010, four undocumented students occupied the Arizona office of Senator John McCain. Across the country a flurry of occupations, hunger strikes, demonstrations, and marches followed, calling for support of the DREAM Act that would allow these young people the legal right to stay in the United States. The highly public, confrontational nature of these actions marked a sharp departure from more subdued, anonymous forms of activism of years past.

The DREAMers provides the first investigation of the youth movement that has transformed the national immigration debate, from its start in the early 2000s through the present day. Walter Nicholls draws on interviews, news stories, and firsthand encounters with activists to highlight the strategies and claims that have created this now-powerful voice in American politics. Facing high levels of anti-immigrant sentiment across the country, undocumented youths sought to increase support for their cause and change the terms of debate by arguing for their unique position—as culturally integrated, long term residents and most importantly as "American" youth sharing in core American values.

Since 2010 undocumented activists have increasingly claimed their own space in the public sphere, asserting a right to recognition—a right to have rights. About the Author
Walter J. Nicholls earned his Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is now Assistant Professor of Sociology and the University of Amsterdam. He is the coeditor of Spaces of Contention: Places, Scales, and Networks of Social Movements (2013).

Overall, a great book. Actual rating is 3.5/5 Stars.

Overall, a great book to learn about the immigration politics in the United States after 1990, particularly about the young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children and faced legal barriers to function in the only society they called home.

Although it was a great book, I have a few issues with it. One, it was a tad redundant. The author kept repeating himself throughout the book, repeating the same sentences to the point where it was kind of annoying. Two, the author does not mention anything about immigration in the United States prior to the 1990s. There was an immigration bills in the 1980s that legalized many undocumented immigrants, but no mention of it. So this book is more of a snapshot of immigration after the 1990s, which makes sense but what about DREAMers before the 1990s? Three, it had too much superfluous information that made the book a bit boring and uninteresting to non-academic readers (which is bad because it limits the book to a particular audience). Since the author is only an ally of the DREAMers, his writing takes a more matter of fact approach to the topics discussed, which is both good and bad, but overall it prevents him from approaching the topics in a more meaningful way.

Nevertheless, it was a great book and one of the few books to discuss the marvelous work of the DREAMers.
