Hayden shows that a key constellation of her concepts―the right to have rights, superfluousness, thoughtlessness, plurality, freedom, and power―can help us to understand and address some of the central problems involving political evil in our global age. In doing so, this book takes Arendtian scholarship and international political theory into provocative new directions.

Kindergarten-Grade 3?A delightful retelling of a Tewa legend. Lovable, lazy coyote is sent by his wife to the big salty lake to bring back salt for cooking. When he is caught napping on the shore by butterflies, they decide to fool him and carry him home without the salt. This trick is thrice repeated until at last coyote awakes at home with the bag of salt beside him. This so pleases his wife that she cooks a feast for all of their friends, including the laughing butterflies who to this day cannot fly in a straight line but flutter to and fro chortling over their successful joke. The book concludes with a helpful author's note on the character of coyote himself and the origin of the tale. The softly textured batik illustrations add feeling and depth to this simple legend. Dusty oranges, blues, tans, and greens capture the New Mexican landscape and bring to life the vibrant scenes of the mesa and the animals' expressions and antics. Ages 6^-8. Arriving at the great salty lake to fetch salt for his wife, Coyote rewards himself with a nap. While sleeping, he is carried through the air by mischievous butterflies, who take him back home--without the salt. After the confused Coyote tries several times to complete his errand, the butterflies take pity on him and return him to his home with a bag full of salt. This gently humorous tale ends with a great feast attended by all Coyote's animal friends, including the butterflies. To this day, the butterflies remember the trick they played on Coyote and "flutter high and low, to and fro, laughing too hard to fly straight." Cactus sitting in a verdant meadow may give some readers pause, but the large pictures, in bright, appealing colors, make the book suitable for reading aloud to groups and for storytelling. An author's note gives the source for the tale, which is based on a Tewa legend, as well as references to other versions. Janice Del Negro

Thrilling book!!!!!

Coyote and the laughing Butterflies is a magical book about a coyote adn his duty to bring salt to his wife from a huge salt lake. It hooked my attention right away and I didn't want to put it down until I was done. The illustrations in this book are grogeous and since I'm an animal lover teh cover and title attracted me right away.

In the book because of teh vivid word choice i could imagine everything the author was telling me in my mind. It was wonderfully written and was very descriptive during parts of the story. i loved the way the author described the beautiful butterflies and teh huge salt lake. Even at times were i couldn't picture sections of teh book in my head the illustrations definately helped me. i highly recommend this book to young kids who liek animals and adventures. Don't pass this wonderful book up!

Coyote tale a good laugh

As a children's librarian, I am always tooking for folk tales from around the world to read or tell to children in the 4-8 year old group. This tale is fun to tell, but reading it and showing the colorful illustrations of the Southwestern United States is a good way to show children in Maine a different region of our country. The listeners loved having the coyote outwitted by butterflies, and many were able to re-tell the tale to parents. I used a coyote puppet to tell the tale, and the children did a butterfly color page after story time. I would highly recommend it to children's librarians and to parents.

Fascinating Native American folk tale

Coyote and the Laughing Butterflies is a very amusing bit ofNative American folklore that can be enjoyed by all ages. It is abeautifully illustrated work in vivid color, written in explanation of why butterflies always fly in an erratic, fluttering way. It is funny, interesting, and compassionate. It is delightful light reading to be lovingly shared with your children to introduce them to Native American folk stories.

Electromedicine: Putting it on a scientific footing

Dr Robert O Becker was an orthopaedic surgeon who researched cell/limb regeneration and ended up as an expert on the effects of electricity on the body. His work puts a sound scientific basis to the area of electric fields. He was involved in reviewing electronic fields for the military which gave him a unique access to data. This allows him to bring together an interesting range of facts.

Hospitals now use a number of devices that are based on his work. One device was patented by Dr Andy Bassett (a student of his) and involved using a magnetic field to speed bone union in fractures.
Another device involves inserting 2 electrodes into a bone or wound which is infected (and thus not healing) and using a mild electric current to kill the bacteria. My friend says they did this to him in hospital recently... so it's obviously catching on.
A third device is being used in hospitals for cancer: using 2 carbon nanotubes (probes) we can liquify cancer tumours using the electroporesis effect (as documented by Dr Robert Beck a physicist). Beck based his work on Kaali and Lyman... and they based their work on preceding work... which I assume included Becker.

A surprising book. Covering topics you don't expect to find mentioned. A book with credibility. A book full of useful facts. A book that advances our knowledge of electronic hazards significantly.

Dr Robert O Becker died in 2008... but not before finally patenting a device for regenerating tissue in 1998 ie. the de-differentiation of specialised cells and their re-differentiation into the required tissue. So who needs stem cells? I'm at a loss why this work hasn't been more widely used or cited... and it's not very complicated either... although I suspect that Becker might have left out a bit of detail.

Becker did do a little bit more work on healthy magnetic fields that isn't documented here... as he also seems to be behind at least one device to improve cell metabolism (similar to Bassett's idea only for the whole body).

The use of electrical stimulation in treating depression and addiction is also an area that is starting to get serious attention eg. refer Dr Meg Patterson (NET) and Dr Robert Beck (Biotuner). Beck gives a fascinating history of this in an audio interview.

Electronic fields can have both positive and negative effects on the body... Becker documents both.

Unfortunately Becker fails to reference his own work properly... but you can find the references in his 1998 patent.

This is not hard reading. Becker keeps it simple. Anyone should have no trouble understanding this.

It is a well informed opinion. Much speculation and myth is based on Beckers work. I found Becker originally by trying to track down who people were referencing when they made claims about electromagnetic fields. Most references seem to be refering to Beckers work... so read from the source?

Beckers previous book "The body Electric" is probably the book most people cite.
If you have to choose between the two... buy the first one... then you'll probably be hooked and buy the second one anyway.

i loved this book. So many things that I learned. Am getting so into 21st century body therapy. Micro-pollution vs micro therapy. Believe me, electro magnetic therapy works!

The unseen dangers around us

The NASA, supposed to hire the "crème de la crème" of the scientific intelligentsia, aren't getting any further than declaring that "life is a self-sustained chemical system capable of undergoing Darwinian evolution". For a start, Johnjoe McFadden shows in his book Quantum Evolution: How Physics' Weirdest Theory Explains Life's Biggest Mystery (Norton Paperback) that the Darwinian evolution, guided by chance and chance only, can't be demonstrated by simulations nor experiments.
On the other hand, insisting that life is a "chemical system" is completely besides the point. Dr. Robert Becker, one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, nominated twice for the Nobel Prize, discovered that curing injuries and broken bones is a process guided by electrical currents. Following those early discoveries, he went further on to find out how our bodies are able to detect that's something wrong in the first place. He found that our autonomous nervous system relies on pain impulses to trigger the curing process, and that those pain impulses run through acupuncture meridians discovered in China thousands of years ago. Dr. Becker says : "Input DC electrical signals carried the information that injury had occurred along the acupuncture meridians to the brain, where part of this group of signals reached consciousness and were perceived as pain. The remainder went to more primitive portions of the brain, where they stimulated output DC signals that caused the cells and chemical mechanisms at the site of injury to produce repair. This is a complete closed-loop, negative feedback control system..."
Dr. Becker didn't rest his case here. He continued his search for the scientific truth and considered that if our bodies produce electromagnetic fields, those will probably suffer when exposed to external electromagnetic fields. Now, the natural geomagnetic field of our planet oscillates at about 10 Hz. In the 20th century, humanity built enormous power distribution networks around the earth, and choose arbitrarily oscillations of either 50 or 60 Hz, 5 to 6 times above the natural geomagnetic field. This means, in the words of Dr. Robert Becker, that: "the entire population of the world is willy-nilly the subject of a gigantic experiment. Daily exposure of nearly everyone is a fait accompli". He calls this "electro pollution".
This isn't without consequences. Tests on animals show that electro pollution produces stress. People living close to high voltage power lines have also more chance of suffering depression. And to make things worse, human cancer cells exposed to 60 hertz electromagnetic fields for just twenty-four hours, result in a six fold increase in their growth rate. This has been confirmed in real-life situations. Dr. Marjorie Speers of the University of Texas showed that workers in electrical plants where EM fields are very strong have 13 x more chance of brain tumors than a control group. Dr. Becker says : "We are constantly exposed to cancer causing agents in our environment, ranging from carcinogenic chemicals to cosmic rays. As a result, we are always developing small cancers that are recognized by our immune systems and destroyed. Any factor that increases the growth rate of these small cancers gives them an advantage over the immune system, and as a result more people develop clinical cancers that require treatment."
Electricity producers and cell phone operators aren't very interested in this kind of scientific investigation. In this era we are living in, where science has been privatized, those studies are being blocked. However, Dr. Becker has always put the scientific truth and the interest of the general public above his personal career or salary, and therefore helped testify in several committees against new power lines and new antennas. That's how he finally got fired. Dr. Becker is a great scientist and a brave man, a rare combination in the dark ages we live in.

Time travel on a personal level

Musical prodigy Henry’s life has fallen apart following a breakup with his girlfriend, Val, and her transfer to another school. Haunted by increasingly bizarre hallucinations, Henry is led one night to the George Washington bridge, where he subsequently passes out. On awakening, Henry not only finds himself perfectly sane, but in a remote cabin the Catskills rather than on the GWB. His two abductors, one middle-aged, and one an old man,, are looking to fix their own lives as well, and may in fact be versions of Henry from the future.

The back blurb is a bit misleading, as the story actually is less about the relationship between Henry and Val, and more a twisty story involving time travel. Henry has somehow tapped into some natural music of the universe that allows him to travel in time. Alternating chapters follow different versions of Henry as he attempts to undo his past mistakes. Although this is potentially confusing, it’s actually pretty easy to follow and the chapter title usually gives the age of the Henry it follows.

Henry’s chapters alternate with those following Val and Gabe, Henry’s best friend since childhood. The two are brought together following Henry’s disappearance. Although these chapters are generally more mundane than Henry’s, Gabe finds himself questioning his own sanity when he is seemingly haunted by a future version of his missing best friend.

Despite some big ideas involving time travel, The Lost Boys Symphony always feels like a rather intimate story with a very human focus. The characters are all pretty well developed, and the ending is actually pretty clear despite all the twists and turns.

Henry, Gabe, and Val are very close. Henry and Gabe have been best friends since they were toddlers and Henry and Val have been high school sweethearts for years. After a few years at junior college, Val decides that she needs to discover herself and runs off to NYU, leaving Henry and Gabe behind. Within a year, Henry has spiraled into his first psychotic break. But here comes the tricky part, is Henry actually insane, or is he a time traveler?

During Henry’s first break with reality at 19, he collapses on a bridge only to be captured by his future selves, 41 and 80. From here, we skip around a lot, progressing from Henry’s age at 19 into the future as if he had never met his other selves and how his life would have progressed. But 41 and 80 have different plans. Due to his psychosis and tendency to go off his rocker every decade or so, Henry’s life became a mess. So at the age of 80, Henry decides he is going to go back in time and “fix” his past mistakes, starting at 41. When everything goes awry, they go to 29, and then eventually lead back to 19.

Honestly, I don't know how I feel about this one. The concept was intriguing, very reminiscent of The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Butterfly Effect as other reviewers have mentioned. My issues lie in the characters. Not only are they kind of s***ty people, but they are rather underdeveloped. Don’t get me wrong, s***ty people can be entertaining, sometimes even likeable in their own way, but their lack of depth is what makes this one fall flat.

Henry is a bit of a self-centered whiner, at every age. Granted, I am sure if any of us were losing our grasp on reality, we would all be whiny complainers too. Plus, he obsesses over everything. To be fair, some are on his delusions which revolve around a cacophony of sounds, particularly a sort of symphony (see what they did there) created by noises surrounding bridges. Given these things, Henry is still the most likeable and developed character, even if we have no idea what he is thinking or doing.

Gabe, Henry’s supposed best friend, is kind of a douche. Ever since Val appeared, he has been not so secretly in love with her. I’ve never understood this, but I guess this happens more often than we realize or The Cars wouldn’t have made a song about it. Not only do we not get to know Gabe aside from his secret obsession with Val, but he doesn’t really seem to care two licks about what happened/is happening to Henry. It’s all about him. As soon as Henry is out of the picture, guess where he runs. His moral fiber runs deep.

Gabe knew at that moment that they would not be resisting forever. They wouldn't be resisting at all. He told himself it was for the best. The longer they went without touching each other, the better it would feel when they finally did, and when Gabe really thought about it that meant that the ethical concerns underpinning their mutual resistance were more or less moot. Better to do it sooner rather than later. They'd enjoy it less. Which in turn would make it more acceptable.

Then we have Val. As I said, she escapes her boring life at Rutgers with Henry and Gabe to go find herself at NYU. She loves Henry more than anything but feels trapped by his happiness with the boring here and now. At 19, I totally get that. It’s selfish, but we all deserve that. I can’t really judge wanting more out of life. What I don’t get is that she bartered with her mother to break things of with Henry so that she could go to NYU. Seriously? Yeah, you love him, I can tell. Even though I didn’t particularly like Claire in The Time Traveler’s Wife, at least she really loved her time traveler and she definitely had more depth and emotion than this poorly written character.

The Lost Boys Symphony is not without its redeeming qualities. It is ultimately a story about love, sacrifice, and how even the smallest choices we make effect our future and the lives of those around us. This is reality and not everything can be painted in rose colored glasses, nor should they be. Honestly, I think if the characters provided more feeling and depth, I would have enjoyed this much more. People aren’t perfect, but we need to know they are real.

Definitely worth the read

Wow. Having finished this book, I'm honestly unsure how I feel. I'm unsure who I was rooting for, or what I wanted to happen, or what I expected to happen. This book never seemed to have a logical path and in that I was both surprised and not surprised by each event that happened in this book.

Firstly, a note of clarification. I've been dying to read this book ever since I read its blurb, but I feel like the blurb was a tad misleading--Val is not lost in the traditional sense of the word; she is only lost to Henry, and Henry's sanity is a little questionable.

With that in mind, this book is equally about Val, Gabe, and Henry (though Henry is multiple characters in himself), and the relationship between the three and the pairs that make them up. It's about them, about love and the ties that bind more than it is about time travel, and its about the different paths life can take and how these paths intermingle.

The three characters didn't really play on my emotions at all. I could relate to Val and Gabe a lot, especially the rollercoaster of emotions they went through--at multiple points I could sympathise so hard. All three of them seemed kind of lost in this world, and Val notices this at the beginning. She tries to fix it by leaving Henry, and while her decision makes sense, I'm not sure if she found what she was looking for in leaving him or at any point afterwards. I'd have liked a little more day-to-day information about them, as I didn't feel like I knew them very well. I did enjoy the little backstory we got of them in high school, meeting.

There's a really intriguing circle going on. Henry at 80 discovers time travel first and comes for 41, and with each decision a younger version of themselves make their memories seem to be overridden, but each decision has consequences of epic proportions. The plot of this book isn't quite linear--though are books with time travel ever?--but certain events drive it forward.

Ultimately, I think Henry acts both very selfishly and very selflessly, and shows that it's the quality of life that really matters. It also made me think about memory and how life occurs in the past, in the memory, and how easily events and people can be erased from the world's collective memory.

While I wasn't as enthralled as I thought I'd be based on the blurb, I do recommend this book. It was well put together and definitely went in ways that surprised and intrigued me. I'm still not sure how I feel about it, or if I feel very strongly at all, but it's well worth a read and I'm looking forward to anything other novels Ferguson might write. I want all my friends to read this so I can discuss and dissect this book, and I'll probably read it again as I think there were some nuances that I missed that pull this story even more tightly together.

With this volume we are more than half way through the "Mother's Rosario" arc. Mostly following the Sleeping Knight's in this volume we see them attempt the impossible by trying to defeat the 27th floor boss with just a party of 7. we get to see alot of fight scenes as well as more character development for Asuna and Yuuki. I'm assuming the next book will complete this story but can't wait to see it done manga style! Also Kirito stealing the spotlight for a brief moment. XD
